What's happened to your knee pads?

Ok, I drive lots of old iron and some points of exhaustion and missing parts make sense as they go through the "used car" stage.

BUT really, WHAT is happening to all the knee pads?

Did anyone ever look at them and just say, It'll look better with an unfinished dash? I'll take a knife and carve on them. It must be those dradst knee pads that are slowing me down! Huh, wonder what it'll look like if the ash tray just hung there in the middle by itself? Everytime, an interior is offered up, the knee pads go quickly. I'm not particularly anal about driving my vintage cars, but I've never hurt a knee pad in a car that I've owned....even my little British ones. Door pockets, sun visors, seat bolsters etc. make complete sense, but "what happened to your knee pads?".

They're expensive to replace and difficult to fix when needed. My car still has them but I'm considering recovering them in leather because a PO drilled into them to install something.
Probably a graphic equaliser. Remember those?

Meanwhile my door top trims look great. What's with that?

When dealer air is installed there the knee pads are removed. This was done to my car but the original owner kept the pads.

Same here, only unfortunately the original owner of my car didn't keep them. Hindsight being 20/20 and all that I suppose.

Yep, two screws drilled into the middle of the knee pads. I have no idea why. Doesn't bother me enough to replace or remove.
