Just Got Home From Hershey Wow

I am still high on life 5 1/2 hours later. I filled a van with all the parts I bought. I spent $2100.00 on parts but some prices were unbelievable. For example I bought a good 901 tranny for $20.00
a box of nine 944 turbo calipers for $125.00
a 61 356 3pcs case with 10 connecting rods(all look good) for $30.00
a box of early s alum calipers(all 12 need rebuilding) $50
five 16x7 911 fuchs and 2 15x8 2 15x7 fuchs all 9 with good tires and rims look excellent for $550.00
three new in box OEM boxster headlight assemblies for $100.00
new in box 69- ? oem dash for $60.00
29mm weltmiester rear hollow torsion bar set for $50.00
And best of all when the rain started to pour about 20 minutes before closing time this one guy said give me $20.00 and take as much as you want and he had tons of great parts. I must have taken at least $1000.00 worth of parts because he didnt want to bring them home.
Oh yea I also bought a 993 rear deck complete with moving wing and the brake light arch that goes from side to side all like new condition for only $200.00 I want to adapt that to my 69` like jack did to black beauty.
Plus lots that I forgot. Tomorrow I get to unload the over packed astro van(up to the roof) and drool on my new parts
What a show. I will be there every year from now on.

Its been a few weeks since ive been on the bulliten and I just bought another 69`T from oregon. Its not easy finding a deal on transporting it to long island. So far $875.00 is the cheapest. Any suggestions.

Wow! Awesome buys. I am shocked at the prices!

Oh, but the 993 decklid won't fit any car but a 994. If you like the moving spoiler, you're going to have to get a 964 decklid, and you have to do some modifying to it (to the hinges, I believe.)

I did Hershey..a buyers market..forget about asking price..by noon many sellers were asking "what will you give me?" People were not buying and many sellers soon realized that..If you looked like a serious buyer you were king for a day...Some sellers were running around doing the buying by 2 PM..There was not as big a selection as last year in used parts, IMO..I didn't see many spoilers, etc., etc...Ron

Kurt - WOW ... and I thought I found some good deals on the small stuff. Compared to you my purchases were nothing.

I do agree that this will become an annual trip for me as well.

marcesq 04-21-2002 04:56 AM

I guess I should have driven the Suburban :(

Sorry we missed you Ron.

Regards to all.

JuiceMan 04-21-2002 05:32 AM

A good 901 tranyn for $20 holy cow!!

mm86911 04-21-2002 06:03 AM

Unbelievable prices! Not that I need anything right now but will certainly plan to go next year (with a vehicle capable of hauling parts).

cegerer 04-21-2002 09:10 AM

I guess it all depends on what exactly you're shopping for. Although I had a good time overall, I found the swap meet to be a bit of a disappointment. 90% of the stuff was ... well ... junk. Like dozens of boxes full of wiring harnesses - nothing labeled and all tangled together. I guess if you had an hour to sort thru this stuff you might find something useable! Or a set of unmarked scuffed up pistons laying on the pavement - who buys these? But to each his own. I did find a 71 factory parts catalog and few other odds and ends. -- Curt

Marc...I was the only Pelican T-shirt at the place..one guy from the 914 BB said hello...I think all the guys should wear the P shirts..as for junk..there always is ..the 930 console that sold in front of me for $200 was cheap..and every thing else that was sold was cheap..Ron

stray15 04-21-2002 10:15 AM

I had my PP tee on! I only saw one person with one on, and that was in at Wendy's.

RoninLB 04-21-2002 01:07 PM

a friend had a space at Hershey.. he sold a perfect '78 turbo tail spoiler for $300 after chasing the guy to convince him they are worth $450....stray15..we missed each other, could have been LOL...........Ron

marcesq 04-21-2002 01:08 PM

Unfortunatly, my eyes were down the whole time, and I only had a PP shirt AFTER Darren showed up.

Needless to say, I literally ran into alot of people . . . the word for the day was "ohh excuse me"

cegerer: there was lots of junk, and many sellers made me feel like I was doing them a favor looking.

Doug E 04-21-2002 01:19 PM

You'll be surprised when you see the pictures from Darren of us holding the Pelican banner - there were 4 or 5 of us in the picture with our Pelican t-shirts on.

I ran into others through-out the day with their Pelican shirts as well but I guess we somehow missed each other.

Next year maybe we can have a Pelican rest area like there was for the Rennlisters.

I saw some great prices too, a front porsche seat 5 dollars, and some engines for 100. I didn't buy the engines though because I wasnt sure if they ran or not.

Perhaps trying to sell some of the stuff you bought?;) Are you planning to resell most of this? Just wondering.

carnut169 04-21-2002 03:45 PM

Yep- I will confirm the existance of at least 4 Pelican tees... Doug, Steve, Tom, and myself were at the meet around 8:00ish all wearing them!
Can't believe we all missed each other:confused: We did stick by the plan to meet at 12:00 (you will seee the photos).
Junk? You bet. A ton of it.
I purchased two books, some stickers, oil filters, and a personalized tag "Air Kool"- PA (I collect them and as soon as Steve pointed it out I knew it would be a great momento of the trip).
Not all that much for an 11 hour drive. When you really look at it, those items were very very expensive- besides the gas, hotel, food, etc I had a rear tire blow-out on the way home, plus the three of us (Steve, Tom and I) got pulled over in VA and issued tickets.
Good news was that I discovered that I had an un-used tool kit, jack, spare... everything was as if it has been put in yesterday. There were even plastic gloves in there. Brand spanking new... well- it all used to be. Spare and airpump worked perfectly.
All in all it was worth it. I have never seen so many Porsches in one place in my life- not even in photos! I took a bunch and will post them later!

cegerer 04-21-2002 04:02 PM

Anybody else buy one of those "Porsche Support Vehicle" vinyl stickers - the ones with individual letters and the backer sheet to hold them in alignment during application? I thought it would be great for my truck. Just tried to peel off the backing and half of it stays stuck! :( Oh well, I'm only out 5 bucks. -- Curt

Doug E 04-21-2002 06:02 PM

Sean - sorry to hear about your blow out. It was nice to meet you and I'll let you know if my wife and I ever make it down to Atlanta.

racemor 04-21-2002 07:14 PM

Sean, sounds like your ride home was not much better than our ride up. Sorry to hear it, wish we could have been there to help.

Yes, there was a large amount of junk, or maybe they were just parts with "potential". But I feel like if there was something you were looking for you had a good chance of finding it, even though I came up short in filling my shopping list. After recently going to AutoFair in Charlotte and the show at Carlisle on the way home today I am thankful that a Porsche only show exists. You could not find ANY P-car parts at either of these shows. Plus just seeing all of the cars in the lot alone made the trip worth it for me. Plus, now I know I can make a 17+ hour trip in a 29 year old car without one problem. I don't think I could say that for my TR6 in the same situation.

tm

cegerer 04-22-2002 03:09 AM

Tom, did it really take 17 hours from Charlotte?? As the crow flies, that's less distance than I traveled from Michigan and I made it in about 9 hours - 90% interstate/turnpike and 80-85MPH all the way.
