71 Soft Window

There was a 71 Softwindow Targa for sale at Hershey. The guy has owned it for 13 years. He said he has seen one other 71 softwindow. It's an E. The MFI has been replaced with Webers. It's got seats out of an SC or something. Other than that it looked pretty good. Asking $28K. -- Curt

69 Soft Targa 04-21-2002 12:23 PM

Thanks for the info Curt. Did he say if it was U.S. or Euro? I'm curious to see if there are any U.S. Soft Windows after 69 model year.

I didn't ask about US or Euro. The way he talked, it is a US car (and it has US turnsignal lenses). He's used it as a daily driver for 13 years! -- Curt

Just noticed something in my new/old 71 parts catalog. The roll bar itself is actually different for fixed and soft windows. So it looks like anybody doing a conversion to a soft window will need to replace the roll bar! -- Curt

MFI replaced with Webers? Hi back seats, which IMHO look just plain weird in an early car? And he's still asking $28K for an E model? Man, the market for early cars must be stronger than I thought....

On the other hand, I don't think the car sold! I think the $28K number was based solely upon the rarity of the car - i.e. possibly the only 71 soft window in existance. Personally, I don't see $28K sitting there. If it were an 'S' and the ONLY 71 soft window S. Well, that would be a different story wouldn't it? -- Curt

Curt? S vs. E soft window? Only slightly different values, as to my way of looking at early 911 models. It's the soft window thing of this car...soft or hard window, a Targa is still a Targa, and a coupe is a coupe..preferably without sunroof! In other words, this guy is selling soft window? Means nothing to me. Might mean a lot to somebody else, but not to me...

Or not as strong as this guy's imagination! That is NOT a $28k car by any stretch. The car would have to be original, concourse, and have $10000 in gold bullion in the glove box to be worth $28,000. That the soft windows are rare doesn't make them valuable.

Yup. I agree. But there might be somebody out there who considers having "the only 71 soft window" very important. But with the missing MFI & seats and 130K on the clock, I'm not sure even that guy would be willing to drop $28K! -- Curt

You're on target guys. The soft window doesn't neccessarily make it more valuable. It may however make it more desireable to some. As the owner of a 69, I'm a little curious about numbers. Howard Adams at PCNA sez there were only a "handful" of soft windows produced for '69. When pressed for a number he said "50 to 60 912 and 911 combined".

Coupe vs. Targa? I keep one of each. Paul I'll have to hit I-5 on a nice day and take you for a ride. Top off and window down. Too much Sun? Top back on and the window stays down! I'll be keepin' mine...

LOL!! And don't forget, they handle better too (see fineprint below). -- Curt
