Making sense of this serial number. 915/02 7731099
I am getting ready to pull this transmission out of my car and am having a hard time finding out what the serial number means. I found a post discussing what the different numbers mean but I couldn't find a reference to the second #7 in my serial number. Does anyone know what the serial number 7731099 means?

My '78 model year book says its a 930 4 speed transmission. model year 03?
From my manual: Key to 7 digit transmission numbers right to left: 1st digit=Unit type: 7=6cyl engine 2nd digit=Transmission type:1=5 speed, 6=Sportmatic, 7= 4 speed for Turbo 3rd digit=Model year, 8=1978 last 4 digits=Series number |

More likely a typo since it a type 915/02 and perhaps should be 7331099

A typo from the factory? That would make more sense. It looks like all 930 trannies are type 930 not 915.

I know that this probably isn't very important to others but I need to know if this tranny is a 5 speed. I am selling the tranny this week and the buyer needs a 5 speed. The car does not run and the shifter feels very vague which is making it difficult to determine if it is indeed a 5 speed. does anyone have any suggestions or further input on the serial number? Thanks for any help.

I have a 1973 915 with code 915/02 7330972 and a 1972 with code 915/02 7324945. The 3rd digit year codes seem right. The second digits are 3's and both are 5 speed boxes.

Well I was able to figure out that it was a 5 speed by turning the engine over manually and seeing what direction the wheels turned. I guess the second 7 was a typo and should have been a 3. This is a 5 speed 915 from a 73 911. Thanks everybody for your advice and help.

Should have added the book references the '78 model year as a 915/61 for the 5 speed and a 930/34 for the turbo 4 speed.

I have a 915/02 7731324. It is an original 5 speed for my 1973.5 cis. When I received the COA it is listed as a 73124, which the representative said that it is common practice for Porsche to leave out the first 7 when they record it in their records. Same with my paint code. The door has it stamped as 131 for light Ivory, which she stated is correct, but Porsche chose to list it as 11 for light Ivory. Any wonder it is so hard to get accurate records from them?

Yes it is normal to leave off the leading 7 on the 911 transmission numbers; sort of a shorthand. You are lucky to have the transmission # on your COA; many say the # is not recorded. I'm not sure if it is a model year problem or a transcriber failure. Similarly with the paint code, for many years they used the marketing code for record keeping instead of the real paint code; the marketing code was used on the badges of the 1970 & 1971 cars only. Why they continue to print it on the COA is a mystery.

I'm certain the 930 did not use a 915/02 type transmission
