Should I replace my fan housing?

Thanks to some mouse related issues I had to remover the fan and fan housing from my 86 targa. After removing it I discovered that the fan housing cracked in many places (pictures below). I drove the car for two solid summers after I bought it and never had a problem with the fan. Should I just reinstall it and hope for the best, or should I find a used replacement?

That looks quite excessive. I think I would scrap it and look for a better one. Or do what I did and get a vertex.

Time for a new/used one. That one has served its pupose.

It's not as good as OEM but my vote is vertex, it's what I did.

Definitely replace.

Replace for sure. You don't want that thing falling apart while driving.

Wow, thanks for the quick feedback! Now the next question is, does anyone have a sued fan housing lying around? Preferably a 930.106.102.4R?

I checked out the Vertex, and the price isn't too bad. Would it be plug and play with my existing fan and alternator? Are there any tricks to removing the alternator from the fan housing? It seemed to be pretty fused, but I didn't try too hard to separate the pieces since I was hoping to re-use the housing.

When the vibrations take out the fan blades , that will be an expensive lesson!

Try here 911 fan housing | eBay

I did the Vertex swap last year. The good is that it bolts right in. It's aluminum, and probably more durable than the stock magnesium housing. And new ones are NLA.

The bad - it's a rough sand casting. I painted mine flat black - it looks OK. To get the alternator to sit right in the housing, I did a lot of work with a dremel and steel wool, so it would fit correctly. Finally - if it matters - the original ones are magnesium and very very light. Lighter than the vertex replacement.

The verdict - it needs a little work for correct fitment with the alternator, but it's really the only game in town.

I'd stay away from used since if it's not cracked it will be soon. Unfortunately magnesium is not known for long life.
