At this point I should probably add the fact that this will not be our ONLY car,we have a truck( 53 Ford),and a TDI (jetta) as well as a "family" car( Impala SS ).

I recently sold my track car,and our low mileage Z/28 to make room for something I can drive daily AND do some track days,a few autox's,and date nights. Something with the manners for all occasions....this is how I ended up at the 78-89 911. After much thought I have been leaning towards a Targa to add the ability to go topless without sacraficing too much in the looks/comfort department.

From a practical standpoint,after years of doing so,I can no longer justify having a car that sits in the garage most of its life,nor can I justify having 2 or 3 collector cars that do the same.

So,I will be asking alot of this daily driver.

NAFTA decides what duty gets charged on. Any Porsche imported from the US (Or elswhere) is subject to Canadian duty and tax. A Chevy, made in the US, is not subject to duty but is subject to tax. A Subaru Outback is not subject to duty-it is a assembled in the US. A Subaru Forester IS subject to duty-it is assembled in Japan...

You can import most Ducati motorcycles into Canada-You cannot import an MV Augusta-it is not on the list--Rats!

In any case, to repeat and clarify what I said in post #27, "Fifteen years and older exempts you from federal safety and build rules (not duty), but 25 years and older saves you import duty. You pay sales taxes in both cases, and duty for younger than 25 years." Obviously I'm talking about a Porsche.

One of the fun things about being a PCA a/x instructor is that I get to ride in a lot of different P-cars, I even get to drive some of them.

The three cars that have impressed me the most have been:

Any GT3 - Amazing handling and still has a lot of the rawness of the air-cooled cars. Iffy DD for that exact reason. But I could be tempted.

Any Cayman - truly great handling in a car that is comfortable and quiet enough to be a very good DD. Probably the best all around Porsche (so, shoot me), but not much like an air-cooled.

996 or 997 Turbo - Not the best a/x choice, but probably fine for DE. Very comfortable and pulls like nothing short of a locomotive. Iron fist in a velvet glove kind of car.

You could jump in any of these cars and drive cross-country without a care.

My personal choice - either TT. Now, I just have to convince the wife.

What, no air-cooled cars? Well, I will never part with my '84. But, I feel like I am punishing it when I drive it to the office (26 stop lights or stop signs in 8 miles).

And, let's be honest here, the air-cooleds are getting to be old cars. Wonderful cars, but old. And that means a lot of little, and some not so little, things will need attention. A daily driver by definition (at least mine) should require little more than routine maintenance.

No it ain't--it is correcting wrong information previously posted.

Again- to your original query, as to what you seem to be looking for and your geography-- targas leak- you will regret it after a month of Vancouver monsoons, and especially when you see no bids when its time to sell a targa. But even more regret if you buy a 996 with the imploding engines. You had it right the 1st time- go for a G- 50 car that passes PPI. These are unlikely to depreciate if you buy a well maintained example and look after it.

My 87 has been my DD for 6 years. Enjoy driving it more every day.

Targas leak? Mine is noisy but it doesn't leak.

I know what you mean about having a car you can enjoy. I have way too many collector cars that I'm only driving a few hundred miles a year... some less than 100 miles a year.

Thus far in a year of having the SC I've put about 1200 miles on it and loved every one of them. I'm leaning towards thinning out my collection to more of the ones I drive more often.

What year is your Impala SS? I've considered a '94-'96 as a 'family' car.

That's funny, it's a 95...... Maybe you should buy it:)?

I think RFLOZ has it right. I think I drove my 84 more than 2000 miles this winter in the snow and rain and I enjoyed every mile of it. The downside is the constant monitoring and maintenance. You didn't mention if your car is going to be a commuter car for work or just running to store etc.. It takes a bit to get these cars up to good running temps and if you're just driving 2 miles down the road to work your VW might be the better DD. And don't forget how expensive premium fuel is getting.
