79 targa with a RS chassis?

Hi,
I did a research on my 79 targa that I just bought. this is my first porsche and it seems that I got FXXXXD!!!

The car sold to me as a 79 targa and when I searched the VIN # 9113601430 I notice this:
RS (English version) - Lehrenkrauscafe Forums

Is it a 73 RS chassis? what does it means? is it a bad news for me?

What are the consequences for the car?
Engine? boster for the brakes? value of the car..and so...?

Please advice

Thanks,
Yaron

I would double check your vin. Perhaps some numbers were transposed. That vin apparently belongs to this RS:
My 911 Carrera RS

If you paid for a 79 targa and got a 73 RS I'd call you the luckiest man alive, but alas they did not (to my knowledge?) make a targa RS

1430

Hi there,
I do want to set the record straight. Chassis number 911 360 1430 belongs to my 1973 Carrera RS.
First of all because the chassis-number is within the series of the RS's and has nothing to do with a 1979 Turbo look Targa (anyway there were no Turbo look targa's in 1979).
Second i bought the car from the original owner. The car was delivered in Belgium and has always been in Belgium.
I hope you didn't pay too much because the car you have is definitely NOT a 1973 Carrera RS.
I hope this settles this matter once and for all.

Now this is unbelievable!

Hi JD,

I don't how can it be and why? but as you see at the pictures this is the vin on the car. I'm in Israel and the car is in NJ waiting for the shipment to Israel . don't know what to do now

look at the this:

I bought the car 2 weeks ago from a dealer on Ebay and he sold it to me as a 1979 targa.

so....this is a mystery!

I don't think the plaque in the bottom photo is a genuine VIN-plate. The top one does look genuine, and has a different VIN number on it as well. I'd check that one out.

The VIN for a '79 Targa would look like
911 921xxxx. "9" for '79, "2" for SC and "1" for Targa. Looks like you're getting the right car (don't know what you've paid, but I guess a '73 RS would be worth roughly 30 times as much) with the wrong Vin.
There's another number on the trunk floor next to the tank, maybe that one will be still the original one...

Both vin tags are not making sense

what is the number stamped into the body inside the front trunk nest to the smugglers box , it there a vin sticker is the driver door post

the dash vin is fake, 100%

the matel tag SC 911650 is not showing up in the books and seem fake also

do not see this car making it thru customs.

The fourth digit is hard to read b/c of the scratch, but no way a 6. I think that one's supposed to be a 911360.... as well.

well if it is 911360 on the metal tag ,
the seriers should be E or F not N ( N seriers 911 is 964 91-92)

And 5th dig 0 is always a coupe
1 would be targa

VIN tag places are

driver side windsheild post (metal tag)
driver side door post sticker
front trunk metal tag
front trunck stamp into chassis

4th digit isn't a 3, on the metal tag. Compare it to the 3, next to last digit and look at the different curvature on the lower half. Looks like a 6 to me.

It seems that it is impossible to know by the plate and the small one maybe the dealer made for the show room. I don't want to jump to conclusion. I will contact the dealer monday morning and keep you posted.

Bottom line is that the serial numbers, shown so far, and what your car really is indicate that one has nothing to do with the other.
Some one committed fraud somewhere in its ownership. And now that fraud was perpetuated by reputable dealers.

Get your money back and buy another car. Otherwise you either have a parts car , or will be continuing the fraud.

Good luck

I don't have a metal tag handy but the vin numbers there are not raised like all the other numbers and letters.
those vin numbers look indented ,
Some will tell you if that is correct but the VIN has been tampered and that makes everything else suspect.

Quick Google search- The images didn't copy but there is an image of this car along with it. Owner needs to ASAP make the dealer take this thing back for a full refund. Nothing but problems for you otherwise. This isn't just a problem car, it is illegal.

Is it an RoW car? That would explain the "custom" dash plate, as well as the small rear bumperettes. I don't know what that would mean as far as decoding the real VIN, though.

I was alerted by a long time PCA member from MI to the auction for this car while it was on eBay. I head up the PCA Carrera RS registry and this member was questioning me about the aluminum tag on this car. I told him it was definitely not the correct VIN for RS 1430.

My research confirmed that the real RS 1430 was owned by JD in Belgium and alerted him to the auction. The PCA member tried without success to contact the dealer in Chicago about the completely fabricated VIN plates on the car. Don't let this car leave the US yet. Start by contacting the dealer. If you don't get anywhere post that information here. Hopefully someone here can help figure out who you should contact in IL next.
