				RPM band?

I'm kinda new to the porsche thing, haven't got to drive it much, but I noticed that the car doesn't take of the line very well. You have to get the RPM's around 2000 at least to get it to go good and trying to cruise at anything below that is just not going to happen. I take it that that is normal and Just the way it should be drivin ( in the power band). Am I correct or is this a problem? I tear up my mustang after I've been driving the porsche because I rev the crap out of it...

Yes, those are two very different cars. The Mustang is a street car sometimes dressed up as a race car. The Porsche is a slightly de-tuned race car with license plates. From stop light to stop light those two cars make a fair fight. The Mustang has a chance. On the race track the Mustang does not.

All of the action in these cars happen between 3000 and 7000 rpms. I had the same concern. Redline it a few times you'll see.

You know, some folks have a hard time revving anything, including Porsches, thinking it must be damaging something. Consider this: The Porsche factory does not enter drag races, or even 500-mile races. They only care for endurance racing. It's like 24 hrs bores them now. If someone came up with a "last one standing" race where the cars scream around the track until only one car survives, I think Porsche would probably re-enter the racing industry. Finally, a challenge.

Yes, I think Porsches are tough. I think that's been proven quite convincingly.

I thought that was the case. Everything about the porsche compared to my mustang is different. The clutch is heavier, no power brakes, no power steering, so when I drive the mustang it's like the pedals are too light. I'm going to rip the clutch out of that thing soon. I love the porsche though, It is a true sports car ( new mustang is almost a joke), and of course the chicks really like it. That helps alot...

For myself the "revs" are the fun of it. I feel just like I'm in a cockpit and everyone knows I'm in a race car

I had the opportunity to go through this yesterday with a friend of mine who has an '87 Carrera with 54,000 miles on it.

We went for a cruise with him at the wheel and he kept shifting at 3K RPMs or so - man, how frustrating. I explained that even the documentation in his owner's manual only warns to just keep it under 4400 RPMs until it's warm. I was able to convince him to let me drive back to his house - there is now one more 911 owner out there who has experienced the "grin factor". I think the best was when I was holding at about 42-4400 RPMs in 2nd gear, gave him a look and punched it up to around 6500 or so and again in 3rd. I have no idea how fast we were going! I'm betting that this car is going to see some more miles soon! JrDavid68 |

when I first bought mine the PO took me for a ride first and he rapped the tach out a few times and the car loved it and I could do nothing but smile... I drive it the same way. It's just a toy to me and I have so much fun cruising it around but winding it up is the only way to go... I miss my porsche.. can't wait to drive it this weekend.

Weather is looking better for a rocket ride on the Ducati though.....Europe has some great roads! To answer the original question----nothing----repeat nothing---happens in a 911 under 3500 rpm! Let that flat six sing!!!!!!

Last year a co-worker bought a 83 targa and used it as his daily driver to work. I gladly talked to him a bit about Porsches and my undying love for them basically. But he was just an idiot when it came to his Porsche. He complained that it wasn't fast enough for him and that he had driven a miata which was his previous car and said that it had more get up and go. I basically told him that he didn't know what power and handling he had under the hood. I told him to open her up "rev it up past 4500 rpm and let her breathe" I said. I don't think he ever "got it". Anyways he ended up selling the car. I think the main reason he bought it in the first place was to impress to girls on Melrose. What a chode.
