Identifying engine liter size?
How do I identify my engine liter size?
3.0L,3.2L,3.3L Is there a way just by looking at it? How's that? I'm not sure exactly what size engine I have only what the seller told me. |
What year 911 do you have? Was the engine rebuilt/hot rodded as some point?
What did the seller tell you it was? Knowing these things will help but the definitive way to know is to know what heads/cylinders are on it. |
I have a '83-911sc. I was told by the seller the engine was upgraded to a
930-3.3 liter back around '1986. I don't doubt him I was just wondering how he knew by looking at the engine it was a 3.3 Liter. There is a mark stamped 930/66 under the fan housing. |
Post a pic of the engine. If it is a 3.0 the airbox is about 18 inches long, held down with 2 rubber straps. It sits ontop of the engine and is rectangle in shape. The air inlet faces the driver's side of the engine. Also you will see the fuel distributor on top of the engine, just behind and to the right of the airbox. This engine has the CIS system and has hard steel lines to distribute fuel.
A 3.2 or a 3.3 will have electronic fuel injection and the air box is much smaller, and is on the right side of the engine compartment. The airbox is clamped shut via metal clips. Also the filter is mount vertically versus the 3.0, which is mounted horizontal. |

Don't laugh I know it's dirty. New to me and still in the process of cleaning.
What is it? http://www.compugen.net/engine.jpg |
I'm only laughing because the picture is missing.SmileWavy
Wait a sec, now it is there! It is a turbo! Probably is a 3.3 liter but the engine # would be a better indicator. Definitely not a stock setup so pretty much anything could have been modified. Hopefully the seller can provide additional details. |
930/66 is an MY 83 and up 930 turbo engine. You have an upgraded intercooler.
Certainly a very fun car. |
My bad it's marked 930/83 and 6891286.
6 = 6 cyl 8 = US Turbo 9 = modell 79 No reference to how many liters. |
930/83 does not compute. Maybe it is a 930/63 as that matches the engine serial number range.
Eng. Mod Cyl Ltr KW Yr Model Eng. Ser. Num 930.63 6 3,3 195 79 911 TURBO (CAL) 689 1001>2000 Sorry about the crappy formatting. |
What does modell 79 mean?
I will double check but my notes say 930/83 since the mark is under the air duct I will have to come back with confirmation. |

You should be worried about which transmission you have more. That engine will shuck your first and second gears in a 915.
|
How can I identify which transmission is installed?
It's a 4 speed and I was told it too was upgraded to a 930 Turbo Transmission. Not sure what 915/30? |
Your fine on drivetrain, now what about brakes?
BTW congrats, your car is awesome. |
What transmission is a 4 speed 915/30?
I was told the brakes where upgraded as well to 930 turbo calipers. In comparison what's this setup sound like to you? good, bad, maybe? Does this setup look like a 3.3 liter? Any sure way to identify the liters? |
Chances ate good that yours is a 3.3. Could have been upgraded with 3.4 pistons and cylinders but not as common as 3.3. Trans as a 915/30 I'm really not sure on though. If it a 915, it's not as stout as the 930 trans. But most 915's are 5 speed so I'd guess your 4 speed is 930? Where is first, upper left or lower left? Look under the car at the trans, look for a flat sided plate like section and if it's dirty, wipe till you see numbers. Should say 930 something.
Sounds like your brakes are good too. Tell us what you have exactly if you know. And no more help till we see this gem. |
The car is new to me but here's a work in progress spec sheet I'm working on.
