Porsche Crest Northwest Pelicans! May I please borrow your garage? ;)

During my cross country trek I had only one serious mechanical issue: a bearing in the transmission started getting quite noisy, and now is extremely noisy.

I have all the parts to do the job, and most of the tools, and I even have some time available! I have actually done this job before and was able to drive the car in and out of the garage the same day, but it was a long nasty one. What I lack is a facility. The Navy does have an auto hobby shop, but they specify "no major overhauls" I don't know what they define as a major overhaul, but they may look at me funny as I drop the whole engine and tranny, then proceed to yank the guts out of the transmission.

Ideally I'm looking for someone:
1) with a garage near Everett, WA
2) with some special tools, like a deep 30mm socket, an 8mm 12 point bit, and a really big wrench for oil lines
3) with 4 jackstands and two jacks
4) who can be bribed with beer
5) If you can help, that'd be awesome, but I can do the work myself if I have to.

Anyhow, anyone want to drink beer and disembowel a transmission? (Not necessarily in that order)

Thanks!

-Dan

I'd be all over this if you were a bit farther South, Dan. There has to be someone up North who has the facility you need. Good luck!

Dan, I could hook you up with ALL that. Except for the very small detail that I'm in Pullman, and not on the Wet side. Sorry.

The car made it from about Missoula, MT to Bremerton with the noisy bearing. The last time she drove it was from Bremerton to Everett, I drove her around, but I really shouldn't have.

She still runs, and runs well, but I think Pullman may be a bit.... ambitious, for her poor ailing intermediate plate bearing.

Thanks anyway!

Hey Dan, do you think your car could make it to Lake Stevens, about 40 miles North East of Everett?
My wife has relatives in that entire region and asking them if this is a possibility...

Dan, try posting on the Pacific Northwest Region site. There are many supportive, talented, experienced and helpful Pelicans within a few miles from you. Jeff Higgins is in Lynwood, about 15 minutes south of you and he knows everbody up there.

If you and the car were in Austin...

There would be no question.

I think I could easily make it just about anywhere from Olympia to Bellingham on the wet side. I want to stay on the wet side as I'm not confident of her ability to take a mountain pass. Over in Kitsap county or on Whidbey Island would also work.

Are your wife's relatives Porsche (or generally car) people? Would they have tools?

Thanks!
Dan

Just missed! She spent 6 years in Conroe, then actually came out and was driven for a while down in Corpus Christi.

I've heard good things about Austin

Thanks!

No Porsche people but car people. We are waiting for an answer from them about garage and tools...

I'm in Portland.
2 post lift.
All the tools you'd need.

I helped Leland drop an engine at Mt.Home air base many years ago.
I think the issue is time. Not the type of repair.

No response yet Dan... I'll check first thing in the morning, around 6:00ish.
Do you have a place to stay for the night?

Dan,

I'm over on Bainbridge Island. I have a scissor lift in the garage and a table for pulling the engine out. Also have at least some of the tools you mentioned.

Use the Auto Hobby Shop. I loved those during my time in the Navy living in the Bremerton area. Bangor has a decent one. My favorite was in Jacksonville FL where I did much the same procedure ( a clutch on a VW bug I had driven there from Nebraska)

The "no major overhauls" is to deter the 3-12 month restoration with a rusting hulk parked outside. Most of these places have a spot to park your vehicle/roller overnight if needed.

If you describe your project vaugely and anomalously over the phone, just to check their tolerance for the relatively short time you will take it should assure you that they will welcome it. Waiting for a stall on a Saturday morning for a 20 min oil change was the biggest problem - so if you can work midweek that would help too.

It sounds like you are dialed in for an efficient project. If you show steady progress/presence and finish in a day or two no one will hassle you and you will likely get help from the Machinist Mates working there! Of course the beers would be discouraged while working - but the club is usually close.

Sorry but my wife's relatives didn't even respond to our request... As they say, you don't choose family, but you choose your friends.
Ping me if you are planning on coming down to L.A.
