Ok I posted here about a 1966 on Ebay and got some good answers. - Thanks everyone.

That has raised a few more questions about Pre vin numbers and matching numbers that I am not sure about.

1. Is this one of the better places to search a 67 or earlier Porsche other than contacting Porsche for the Build sheet ? : Search by chassis number

I looked up my car and it looks like the above link basically gives you year of build and what the range of numbers for the total number of cars built that year.

Can I assume there is not much more info to be gotten from the 6 digit number?

2. What is "Farbiton 6602 as found inside the door of my 66 911. Is it year of fabrication and month?

3. What exactly is Numbers Matching? How do you know exactly what are the correct numbers for body , transmission, and engine?

My engine has no numbers on it. I was told it may be a replacement engine from Porsche and they did not supply a number on replacement cases.(OF course they could have been ground off but I see no evidence of this)

So what would be the correct matching numbers for my engine? Is it any 2.0 that was supplied in 1966? Or is the number on the engine more specific than that and it actually was a unique number for my car?

The engine has a unique serial number. The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity (COA) would tell you the VIN, engine type and serial number, and transmission type and serial number. Well, at least they used to. ;) Without a COA, if you looked at the VIN for your car, the best you can do is estimate of range of possible engine and transmission numbers that might have been original to your car.

If you have no engine serial number and it's a replacement engine, you car is not "numbers matching."

So it probably would be throwing money away to get a COA seeing as I already know I do not have the original engine. Probably having the COA for the car might tell me the transmission is correct number but since I do not have the engine it really would not add too much to the value of the car.

I've been able to get conifirming information over the phone from PCNA. Matching numbers is an American term as engine match the VIN. They don't on a Porsche.

Early owners papers will sometimes show the Porsche's engine # in place of the VIN or in somes cases both numbers. Makes it hard to sell a car with a wrong VIN. The also tended to use the year of sale as the model year. My 58 had both those problems and I had to straighten out a NJ pink in CA......

Any thoughts from anyone on this:

6602 is the Porsche color code, which is Polo Red. The white ebay car is originally 6405 which is Champagne Yellow.

Thanks for the color info. I would have liked mine to still be Polo Red rather than its present color of Martha Stewart white.
Would the COA confirm the Sun Roof mine came with?

Yes, the COA should list the sunroof if it was installed at the factory but as already mentioned, COA's are all over the map with regard to completeness and accuracy.

If you could post a picture of your sunroof, it may be possible to tell if it was factory installed or dealer installed--a common practice back in the 60's. Here are a few clues:
1. Motor in the back, factory. Motor in the front, above the mirror, dealer installed.

2. Rear drain holes on a 66 were in the roof, by the rain gutter, above the rear quarter window. Most dealer installed had drain tubes exiting in the channel of the engine cover, though it could be in the roof.

3. Factory sunroofs had a polished aluminum hardware and a wind deflector along the front edge that flipped up and faced forward when the sunroof was opened. Dealer installed generally did not have a wind screen.

4. The shape and location of factory sunroofs was a bit different than dealer. Dealer installed were a bit narrower and set farther back from the front of the windshield to make room for the motor.

Thanks that info definitely puts mine as factory. I did not even know they did a roof at the dealers.

BTW- I have never seen that drain location on later models

Later models all have the rear drain holes in the channel of the engine compartment lid. Front drains exit under the car, between the back of the wheel well and the front door hinge post.

So this was unique to the '66?

No. It was a carry over from the way the 356 sunroof drained at the rear so the very early 911's--65-66--had the holes in the roof. I think the change to tubes leading to the engine compartment appeared in the 67 model year but I'm not sure. Someone will post the correct change over year.
