Thank you very much Grady, I appreciate the good words. You too, Eric..

Well, its over, sadly. I spoke with the Porsche PPI mechanic over the phone and had a pre-PPI discussion about my concerns with the car before it was to come in tomorrow, just to make sure a few specific concerns were addressed. His concerns matched mine, then one of the concerns mushroomed when the mechanic realized he was familiar with this car and how it had an unsavory history and longstanding issues before it was sold to the current owner. Something about this car bothered me. It looked great in photos, but there were a few question marks that bothered me and the mechanic elucidated the connection between them. I am really relieved and a little disappointed. Seems like perhaps there was something to the pre-ppi $1000 cash deposit. Back to square one..

Thanks again for your help, gentlemen. I'm going to keep trying...seems there are a lot of cars going on the market now. TC,

Kurt

Well, dang. I hate it when I get a sales job pulled on me.

I'm glad you figured it out BEFORE you did anything hasty. There'll be another one along in a week or two...

steely 03-20-2012 03:49 PM

Sorry about that Kurt - glad you dodged a bullet, you did do all the right things.
There's one out there with your name on it bro.

Kurt,

Please …
…unsavory history and longstanding issues….
don’t leave us hanging.
What was it?

Yes, there is one with your name on it.
On a ‘lark’, this is on Denver Craigslist, posted March 18,2012:
$12,950 1981 Porsche Targa 911 SC, 98K, everything original and in great shape. If you interested please call at: 720-296 4673.

About 10 minutes from my house.

Best,
Grady

Plecostomus 03-20-2012 04:27 PM

Thanks, brothers :) I promise to find one this summer. If I need to buy a red sc and paint it black, I will. Just be it a car with no question marks. I'm just so relieved and elated I didn't get sucked into paying $28 grand for a car that was boughr three years ago for $14, with odo issues and a sketchy history!!

Stay tuned! :D.

Kurt

Thanks for the feed, Grady. I appreciate it. The issues were an obvious odometer discrepancy, a sketchy dealership that had the car in and out for repairs, never properly fixed it(where the car was purchased three yrs ago). The ppi mechanic I spoke with this morning went from being calm and collected to going on full blown alert after he realized this is a car he is familiar with. When I told him the car was bought 3 years ago for $14k, and was being sold for $28k he could not restrain his laughter. I was really touched this gentleman was willing to lose business (on the ppi) in order to save me from being victimized. I couldn't thank him enough...in fact, I'm going to send him a check for what the ppi cost anyway! Thanks again, Grady..

You woulda thunk! :)

DRACO A5OG 03-20-2012 05:56 PM

28K for an SC? wow, does that make mine 38K

No flame intended brother, I am just amazed, does the guy know we are in a recession or is he stuck in the 80's???

+1 you will find a better deal and better car, heck buddy of mine is selling his 86 Targa on the ads section for $22K with 78K miles.

The first car I took for a PPI turned out to be a basket case. It was a beautiful late 70s metallic green targa. 20 minutes into the inspection the tally for required work had already shot past 10K. The mechanic at that point told me I didn't want that car and didn't charge me a dime. He's had my business ever since. I think your mechanic is thinking long term, as he should. A cheque for a PPI is probably not necessary, a case of beer and your future business will probably make a bigger impression.

andyt11 03-20-2012 08:38 PM

I agree on the case of beer. Seems appropriate.

It's spring, lots of cars will be coming out of storage and onto the market. For $28 you should be able to pick and choose the nicest examples.

The right one will come along and will be owned by an owner that puts you at ease.

Have you been looking a long time? I get the feeling from some of the comments that you have! I also took a long time, but it worked out in the end.

30K.....SC cab with a 3.6.......runs like a MOFO.....Draco drove it.....

$500 extra for the oil change......

I am not interested in running around doing PPI's for a buyer that is not completely serious. Pleco, you should know at this point,if the car come through with no defects, whether you would agree to purchase or not. If you like the car,put a deposit on it,and have the PPI done. If it fails, negotiate the issues off of the selling price,or walk,

This is how it works when buying a home, deposit is contingent on subject removal,in the case the subject is the PPI. I would never agree to a PPI with a buyer that was not prepared to give a deposit on the car. For example,a negligent shop could damage the car in the process,or you could crash on the way. Where is the incentive for the seller if you are not willing to put a deposit on the car?

Could not disagree with this more, unless you are talking about a non refundable deposit paid in order to secure a set time whereby the seller will not take any other offer before you can reach an agreement on a sale.

BIG difference between the refundable deposit on a car and one on a house.

With a house sale the deposit is normally held by the realtor or lawyer. This ensures that there is a third party handling the deposit if the deal does not go thru and ensures the deposit is refunded.

In the vast majority of private car deals there is no third party to hold the deposit.

What if the PPI turns out bad, as it apparently has, and the seller is not willing to refund the deposit. Don't forget the seller now holds the cash. Are you going to court for $1,000? Especially if you are from out of state or province.

You may be a very honest seller and would refund the deposit but I would expect that there are many not so honest sellers out there.

Boy who'd a thunk it could be so hard to get a nice car???
Sometimes the way I stumble thru life really does suit me.
Hang in there your search and attention to detail should pay off eventually.
Great patients, BTW

Cheers Richard

Alright, let's make a deal. Either Draco's one or mine, either a white targa, or a red slantnose, for $28k. Either one will be better than that one, the way we take care of our car. Also, your bonus, flight down here to pick one up and we will get drunk in either his or mine garage :D

Out of curiosity, did "that" one meet your very limited SC criteria that is like looking for a needle in a haystack? Many on this thread may not realize your rationale (I do), for paying double what a good SC commands. In the meantime, go buy a very nice SC or Carrera (lots of them out there), and keep looking for your "ultimate" SC while driving (you can always get your money back out of the interim driver). Good luck Kurt...the search is part of the fun, but you've been without far too long :)!
