911 TK motor, interference or not?
 

I just scored a 2.4L 911 TK motor from a USA/Canada 1973 911 with manual transmission. The crank turns, but it doesn't turn the cams. The guy I got it from thinks it is the intermediate shaft, and gave me a replacement. I was wondering if this motor is an interference type or not. I am trying to decide whether to rebuild it or not. There is no heinous noises when you turn the crank, so I think that things may not be too bad inside (aside from the cams not turning). I took the covers off, the chains look good.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

If the tensioner (s) collapse? The way I understand it, ALL air cooled 911 engines can be interference engines..

oh yeah, could be the valves have all been bent out of the way after some catastrophic disaster. doesn't sound good. rebuildable core maybe. cheap?

Well golly, if you took the covers off then what did you see? If the cams aren't turning then are the chains turning? If not, then is the internediate shaft not turning? With the covers off you can see all that. The 924 may have had a non-interference engine but I doubt that any 911 would. So no, if your crank is turning 360 degrees and the cams aren't turning, then that would be a pretty bad sign. I think John said all that.

the 46mm camshaft nut loose and the dowel pin broken or missing? Thats the only idea that comes into my mind...or the chains are broken.

What ever the reason. The case has to be split to repair this motor. So you might as well dissassemble and investigate. Then you can decide if it's worth repairing or part it out.

Oh -- you mean the one on EBay right now. The $250 current price might be a good deal for parts, but it will require a total teardown.
