First start after winter - smoke

Today I started the car for the first time after the winter, it has been standing still since late September. Before I parked it I had an O2-sensor fitted and the mix adjusted. I have also changed the oil and filter.

I first drove for about three minute to the nearest gas station to put more air in the tires. While doing that I noticed smoke coming from the rear and when I opened the lid there was some smoke in the bay but it cleared out in a minute or so and I could not figure out where it came from.

After driving for another 5 minutes I parked again and again there was some smoke in the rear but no clear source.

Is this just the engine burning off stuff that has accumulated over the winter or does it indicate something more serious? I guess I should take it for a longer drive and get the temps up...

/b

Check the seal around your engine where it meets the body. There may be some oil that dripped on your exhaust that is smoking and rising through a break in the seal. Even if so, it is not a major issue.

+1 on what shadowjack1 says.

Ok, I'll take it for a longer drive and see what happens.

Thanks for replying!

My '79 does the same thing every time I get it out of storage after a few months. Maybe between a few drips getting on the exhaust/heat exchangers and the rings being a little sticky. It usually takes 10-15 miles to burn it all off/ get things loose again.

Over the weekend I have driven it a bit more and the smoking has now disappeared.
