What type of bulbs to i need to replace instrument lights?

i pulled my gauges in my 88 carrera today to install some itty bitty bulbs that i got from palo alto spedometer, and when i finally got the suckers out of there, i discovered that i had been given bulbs that were obviously too big. does anyone know exactly what type of bulb i need? are they made by VDO? and lastly, how may bulbs to i need total? do the tach, speedo and the combo oil gauge take two each?

while i had the instruments out i finally got around to spinning the tach (looks so jiggy with the redline at the top) and speedo so i can actually see how fast i'm going (mom steering wheel obstructs the 50+ section of the speedo normally), much better.

as always, thanks,

david benett

David-
I working from memory here, but there are 2 types of bulbs used to illuminate the instruments. One is a bayonet-less bulb, 2W/12V and the other is a bayonet-type bulb. The bayonet-less bulb has not metal at the base and just pushes into the bulb holder. It is Sylvania #9721 or #2721 (if memory still works) - available at pep boys, kragen, etc.

believe the smaller gauges only have one bulb, the larger have two.

try this:

does pelican offer a kit w/ all the gauge lamps in one? do i sense
a marketing opportunity for someone. does anyone make any
higher wattage lamps for better visability?
thanks keith

In case you can't find the bulbs at an auto parts store (nobody had them in my area), here is the factory part number for the one's you need: 900.631.102.90.
