84 Carrera rear tail light plug - grey wire?

Anyone know what this grey wire is for that goes into the tail light plug inside the engine bay on the drivers side? Cannot find in the Bentley....?

There should be one from the connector on each side that feeds the license plate light.

That is the only thing I found also...but where does it go heading back into the wiring harness...mine is cut...but my plate light work fine?

The grey wire runs from the 2nd fuse from the front of the main fuse panel back to the right taillight connector and then to the right tag light. From the connector, a second grey wire runs across the chassis to the left tag light. The wire from the right tail light connector is a separate grey wire to the right license plate light. That is how it came from the factory, what someone has done in the meanwhile is anyone's guess.
