3.2 Carrera Issue With Low Fuel

I HAVE A STOCK '87 CARRERA WITH 61K MILES THAT I HAVE OWNED FOR A LITTLE OVER A YEAR. TWICE IN THE PAST COUPLE MONTHS I HAVE EXPERIENCED ROUGH "BUCKING" WITH THE ENGINE CUTTING OUT. IN THE RECENT INCIDENT THE ENGINE DIED AND TOOK SEVERAL TRIES TO RESTART.

ON BOTH OCCASIONS THE GAS LEVEL WAS VERY LOW (APPROX 1 GALLON). MY MECHANIC SAYS IT COULD BE VAPOR LOCK. AFTER ADDING GAS IT SPUTTERED FOR A MILE OR SO AND HAS RUN SMOOTHLY EVER SINCE.

DOES VAPOR LOCK MAKE SENSE?

had similar problem driving on hot day in az. up in elevation. after we reached 6000 ft car just died. turned over and over then finally started. turned around and came down hill. dezerts that day were 115+. got a few miles and died again. had 76 premium w/chevron fuel injector cleaner in it. thought vapor lock. pulled gas cap no vacum....................the story continues, actually started again and we made it home. we started with replacing CHT-DME-and problem still persisted. fired at night looking for sparks under hood while dark out.......nothing. we prior to this had put new plugs/dist cap rotor/nology plug wires(made little separators) and still problem. air filter/belts were new........at this point WTF???? next fuel filter. still had problem..............well finally replaced the 19 yr old MAS and the problem is gone. good luck only time ever experienced vapor lock on anything here was 914's around july august here.

Thanks for the info. Did your problem occur just once or did it continue? Also did it occur when you were low on gas?

Anyone else have issues when low on gas in a 3.2?

Could be the DME relay going out.

I discovered the hard way, that when the 'low on gas' light comes on, I can't drive nearly as far as with any other car I've ever had

I think you issue was that you probably had even less than a gallon of gas in the tank and you were just running out of gas. The fact that when you filled the car up with gas the problem stopped would be proof of my suspicions.

Have you posted a pic of your car yet? That's the #1 rule around here. I agree, low fuel in tank. Try a bottle or two of Techron that helped my car when I first got it.
