Shift Coupler Boot Needed?

How important is it to have the rubber boot installed over the shift coupler?
I have my coupler properly adjusted but the boot is still off after I installed Ed's coupler just to put the car in gear and move it to the garage to refresh my interior.
Just wondering how much protection is required in that area.

I'll be interested in knowing the concensus on this as well. I left mine off and don't seem to have any problems, as the area remains pretty clean. I'm sure others will chime in with the response "Porsche had there for a reason".

I think you want it there to prevent engine compartment fumes from getting into the cabin.

I am talking about the bellow boot that covers the coupler and not about the seal from the engine compartment to the cabin.
The boot only covers the coupler.

My understanding is that both are there for the same purpose.

My car did not have one and I did not replace it when I did my bushings back there. I have never had an issue with engine fumes in the compartment. That being said since I have a targa and the top is off most the time I most likely would not notice any way. I dont think much dirt and stuff gets in there so I would not worry about that but its up to you.

Regards
Dave
