OT - Used car for sale in PNW anyone?

I have to attend six weeks of classes in Vancouver Wa., and was hoping to find a relatively cheap (1k-2k) car to buy and use. If anyone has a line on anything like this I would appreciate a reply. It obviously needs to be somewhat reliable, I would also like to take it down to Sacramento for a wedding.
Thanks,

Umm...seems to me that a $1k-2K car for six weeks is not very economical. Aside from the sunk costs of sales tax and license fees (I guess around $100), you run a non-zero risk that a $1k car will need hundreds of dollars in repairs to keep running, or just from a PITA perspective, you want to drive it down to Sacto, what if it overheats, blows a tire, etc.

Perhaps you should inquire with Enterprise rent a car or other off-airport agencies about a long term rental. Years ago I rented a full size car for about $200 a month on a month to month rental.

If you are insistent on buying a cheap car, go online to the local newspapers. Don't mean to throw cold water on your idea - just fired off my opinion.

Good Luck,

Don

Anybody know if there is a "rent a wreck" franchise in Vancouver, BC? I have a friend who swears by 'em...says the cars look like hell, but mechanically okay...none have stranded him yet, and cheap compared to Hertz, Budget, et al...

Rent-A-Wreck - that's the name I was thinking of. There are two in the metro Portland area (across the river from Vancouver Washington). Here's a link to Wrent-A-Wreck Rental Locations.

Rent a wreck's price is 150.00 a week. Cheapest big name rental: Thrifty @ 617.00 for 28 days. I agree whole heartedly with the fact buying a $1k car is a risky proposition. But at a minimum price of $1200.00 for a car I have to give back, that just rubs me wrong. I have spent a LOT of money on rental cars over the past few years. It costs $850.00 each way to ship my P-car. That and possibly three weeks. I just thought I would see if anyone happened to be selling a 15 year old Honda or something. Just exploring my options. But thanks for the suggestions.

Hmmm, I understand your dilemma. Then give Priceline a whirl - you have nothing to loose. Second idea is to run an ad in the university or JC newspaper - maybe someone will be out of town and will rent you their car cheap.

From Traderonline, an 87 Civic for $1250: Civic Ad

Good Luck!
