Fuel pump compatibility ?

So I ordered a new fuel pump for my '80 SC and stupid me, forgot to mention it was a ROW car. The pump I received is Bosch part # 0.580.254.967. The pump presently in my car is the one listed for '77-'79 911's, Bosch part # 0.580.254.984. Many of the fuel injection components of the ROW SC are like the U.S. '78-'79 SC, but unlike the U.S.'80-'83 SC. This is because in '80 the US cars got O2 sensors, while the ROW didn't.

Does anyone know where I can locate some information on these fuel pumps so I can tell how they differentiate?

Thanks,
Rob

the 984 pump also fits 1980, by the bosch catalog. 81-83 take the other one. i can't imagine there is much if any difference, being both systems run off the same pressure.

On a related question, is there a pump from a different car that would work with an 82 sc? It seems like every euro car maker used whatever the current off-the-shelf Bosch FI system at the time, so I know BMW, Audi, Mercedes, VW, and I think Volvo and Saab used CIS at the time.

Is there a cross reference chart somewhere showing what cars used what pumps?

Is there another pump that will work? Lots of junkyards around here, and if an Audi or BMW pump plugs right in, I can go through a lot of them before I get to the $274.60 for a new one.

(yes, I'm a cheap bastard)

Thanks for the quick reply John !

Tom :
It would be nice to find a suitable pump from a non-Porsche car, but I guess no one knows. Vertex sells them new for $189.

Interesting thing happened this Saturday morning though, I had run the tank almost dry (it took 19 gallons) and when I filled it up, the pump was quiet.

I wonder if there is rust/crud in the filter screen, and it is making the pump work harder, and my filling it up stirred it up enough to mix it around. After a few minutes, it went back to it's usual whine.

I posted the same question to the Rennlist 911 list, and someone looked it up and provided this information:

Quote:
According to the US Bosch catalog, the only "common" cars listed for that number fuel pump are the 83-81 911 and the 82- 81 924. This pump is also used on some Rolls Royce and some Bentley models, but these cars don't seem like candidates to find in your typical salvage yard.

Well, I guess that means no.

Pull the plug on the bottom of your tank and see how much crud comes out. It's easy to do. Just drive until it's almost empty again, and use a 22mm bolt and nut to loosen the plug. My 22 year old gas tank was surprisingly clean.
