It definitely sounds like a chain rattle. However there is a lot of noise in the video.

Have you used a scope on it? When my tensioner went out, the noise was obviously coming from the chain housing.

Yes it really sounded from the stethoscope that it sounded like the chain box. I went around the whole engine and the sound was mostly around the box and some around the #4 head. I was pretty sure what it was but the next day the sound was gone. I haven’t heard the sound since. Right now I have the tensioners swapped out for new and did the Jerry woods mod as well. Need to replace a banjo bolt I broke and I’ll be good to go I hope.

Just to follow up on my post #35, I had a rattling noise at low RPM once hot, but it would go away above 3,000 RPM. It would only make noise once warmed up. Sounded like a really bad bearing rattling.

I took the timing chain covers off and found the chains were NOT too loose. I did find that one of my pressure relief valves was not seated correctly. See the pictures on post #14. Exact same issue - the cage came out. I put the check ball back in with the spring and the really loose cage. I put a washer over the loose cage that was the right size to keep the cage from popping out. The washer was retained by drilling a couple of holes in the top of the chain tensioner and adding safety wire. Now my noise is completely gone. This fixed my problem that I have been worried about for 2 years. Now I can drive the car again and it sounds great.

Awesome fix. Did you take a photo of the washer retaining the cage? Nice work. Those cages are ridiculous and sometimes always loose.

I did exactly the same thing. It lasted 150 miles.

Maybe you will have better luck.

I performed the Jerry woods mod and kinda wish I had done that before I bought the new tensioner I performed it on. It seems to be something that would work on a bad tensioner maybe.

I must have put over 200 miles on my car this weekend. So far so good. Actually, with the safety wire, I don't see how it can fail. It is not going to come apart any time soon.

I didn't take any pictures. When I'm working on it, I'm so focused, I usually don't take the time to document my progress with pictures. But I have a spare tensioner - I could recreate what I did and take a picture of it.

Yes, it would work on any bad tensioner because the Jerry Woods mod just uses the old tensioner body as a large rigid stick to push up the chain...

Not entirely true. If the mod is done correctly, it just provides a stop for when the tensioner fails. A correctly working tensioner would never touch the stop. I would think that if the tensioner piston were hitting the stop, there would be a noticeable hammering noise when the chain was loose and rattling. That might have been part of the noise I was hearing, as mine has had the Woods modification for many years.
