Headliner Replacement
Hi,
I'm replacing the headliner and the old one was taken out before I purchased the car. The entire interior and glass are out of the car so that is not an issue. I have replaced the foam rubber which resides on the ceiling and will sit underneath the headliner. I have a couple of questions: 1. When replacing the foam rubber on the ceiling I used Dap contact adhesive on the back of the foam rubber. It seemed to hold to the ceiling pretty well and it said it was good for foam. Has anybody used this and do you think it will hold up in the long run. (I have since purchased Wayne's book and think I maybe should have used the 3M Super weatherstrip adhesive) 2. Should foam rubber reside along the C-pillars where the headliner will reach down in the rear (the little flaps on the rear of the headliner) or does the headliner just reside against the sheet metal. 3. I read in Wayne's book about the headliner clips. Where exactly do they reside. 4. Wayne recommends 3M Super weatherstrip adhesive to glue the headliner. Has anybody used this. Any tips on applying it. Thanks, nick 1970 911 E (non sunroof coupe) |

I applied the 3M using a small brush. It is contact cement, so put some on the liner and also the roof. A thin layer is fine. I attached the center on all 4 sides and worked out from there, pulling out any uneven spots. Work towards the corners. You can pull it apart again if you need to, but not more than once and still get good sticking. Take your time, only glue a small amount at a time, maybe 6-12". The clips are used where the liner wraps around the attaching point. I again added those as I went along, from the center out. The tough part is in the back, behind the rear quarter windows. An interior guy told me that you can take any small ripples out with a blow dryer, heating the material up, just don't apply too much heat.
