Front Fender Measurements

Hello all, I have a bit of a problem.

I bought a pair of used front fenders (not a matched pair) for my 1968 912 a long time ago and it turns out that they are different flair sizes. It was not enough to notice when i got them but with them on the car it is quite obvious. One one side the fender sits just about flush with the tire and the other side the tire sticks out quite a bit.

I put the car on a lift, measured to find the center of the car (front and rear) and then used my laser level for shoot a line right down the underside of the car lengthwise and then measured out to the edge of the fenders. I did all this measuring just to make sure that my suspension wasnt goofed up.
It turns out that one side is over and inch wider.

So...Since my stock fenders are long gone, which fender is the correct one and which one do I need to replace?

Also, where is the proper point to measure out from? The center of the car or the outer trunk wall, strut...?

The worst thing is that when i bought these fenders i got them both for $300 and it appears now that the prices for good used fenders have sky rocketed!

Thanks for your help!

I use Google.com a lot. All I did was type in 1968 Porsche 912. Then go to the images tab and you will be presented with one squillion (plus or minus) pics of 912's.

I found this. Should answer your question.

Thanks Bob. I've never heard of google.com before. Next time I need pictures of cars I'll check it out.

What I need is measurements.

Thanks for the bump though.

You are in a bigger pickle than you think. 68 fenders are 1 year only. Their inner lip along the wheel arch gets narrower as it goes up. They did this to make clearance for the new-for-that-year 5.5" wheels. '68 are all wrong (lot more flare) and '67 are wrong because you will not have the clearance for the 5.5" wheels (along with other minor details). They can easily be spotted as the US version had the holes for the 1-year only side markers.

Good luck trying to find '68 only fenders. If you thought early fenders were hard to find you just found a challenge at the next level.

just to add to the challenge.... 68 anything is a pain (ask me, I know). But it also depends on the car. If you have a 911S there are no holes for side markers, as 911S models were not sold in the US so no side markers were required, thus no holes.
