Question Anyone with early Italian front lenses?

There was a post last week about Italian front turn lenses that mentioned the turn signal unit may need to be modified. Does anyone use these and did you have to modify yours? From looking at the unit for my '73 E it seems like they would work as is.

Also, as a side, while my signals are out I am going to refinish/clean them up. Were the insides just painted silver? Mine are so old and dirty it is hard to tell.

Thanks,
Tom

The Italian lenses are available from a guy in Germany (Thomas).

eMail: sprint-star@t-online.de

He's puts them on eBay once in awhile too. They fit the 69-73's. However, I think the housing would need to be modified to provide the proper lighting of the white and amber sections. He originally thought he could get the chrome-trim versions as well, but has since indicated to me that he can't find them. -- Curt

Thanks Curt, that's why I was asking. I saw the set on ebay but did not want to bid if they would not work.

Tom, are you asking about the finish on the housings themselves? If so, I think those are plated somehow. I can check tonight for you. -- Curt

Curt - yes, the inside of the housing. The ones on my car as well as the one I am using as a replacement just seem to have been painted silver. But who knows what has happened to these pieces over the past 29 years.

The thing that makes me think they may be painted is that when you look at the rears there is a small "chrome" piece behind the turn lamp but the rest of the housing seems to be painted like the fronts.

Last winter I tried refurbishing the silver edges of the lenses on my '69. Although it was easy stripping the old stuff off, I had a difficult time finding a silver paint that was reflective enough. I stripped and painted one lense three times and never got satisfactory results.
