exhaust runner temp.
Using a infra red thermometer the exhaust runners while idling all very somewhat is this a function of valve adjustment or injector mixture or all of the above? This is on a88 930 3.3 ..is there an optimal temperature? thanks for any insight.

What kind of temperature readings are you getting? Where are you measuring?
At some distant, not too relevant point of reference, I have measured my 2.7 (fully warmed up), pre-'74 heat exchangers with a surface temperature of almost 400ºF (measured at the collector junction). The EGT is a function of the air/fuel mixture and, in your case, boost pressure. I would be more interested in the EGT's during cruise and especially WOT. For that you need a proper EGT gauge and sensors, preferably 1 in each exhaust runner to reveal what's really going on (a malfunctioning injector is not good to have under boost). I believe in the neighborhood of around 1300-1400ºF for turbo engines is the norm. However, can't speak accurately for real-world 930s, even less so if boost pressure is higher than stock. The intake runners don't all flow the same (some flow more air, some less, some about right), hence the variation in exhaust temps.
I just removed the exhaust from my motor (3.0L turbo) and the difference in exhaust port coloration is obvious. Did you record the temps and cylinder #'s? That would be interesting? |

exhaust runners temps
I monitored all six at the stainless exhaust header at the exhaust port approx. 1-2 ins. all were about 590 to 610 degrees at idle warm....does this seem reasonable? running 3% no cat headers on an 88 930...thanks anyone comment

RJM3,
Do you realize at idle my engine has as much power as your 930? Just another way of saying that we're both normally aspirated until one of us gets on boost (guess who?). Your temp readings at the ports sound reasonable given my lower temp reading further downstream. However, when you're on boost that's when things get real warm. At full song, the turbine housing can glow red hot. Anyone have any WOT temp readings to contribute? Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars www.seinesystems.com |
