Another Idiot Light?

Putting this back on now that I am almost finished with the new carpet.
What is the purpose of this thing?

Is it just another idiot light or is it supposed to act as a switch since it says "On" and "Off" on the face plate?
Inquiring because there is nothing inside to act as and On/Off switch, unless the PO busted it.

Thanks!

It is a highly developed, tested, high speed visual display for Porsche owners.

It lights up.......LOL

It's for 911 n00bs to tell them how to operate the heater levers between the seats. It's lit so that they know how to do it at night. Not a switch, just a lit pictogram of how to work the levers.

The top cover can be pried off by squeezing the sides or by inserting a small screwdriver blade at the bottom of the housing (notch on the left side in the 2nd picture) to reveal access to the 2 screws securing the bottom to the tunnel.
Thank you all for the explanation (and wise ass remark :D); that thing is not needed and therefore not going back on.
