Source and questions re Autopower Roll bar
 

Yesterday's DE event told me one thing, well lots of things, but one thing is that I want to be held more securly in the seat. I have the seats for the over the shoulder harness and want to put in a four-point-restraint system mounted to a cross bar on a roll bar. The Autopoweer bar is recommended. But were do you get them?

I also noticed on Thom's recent Roll bar thread that he had to modify the crossbar to move the seat back. Doe's the Autopower bar w/cross brace permit the seat to be moved way back?

I don't recommend Autopower rollbar. Never use it myself, but it mounts on the floor pan instead of the sill make me think twice to use it as protective device. DAS rollbar seems like a better design. Check it out. http://www.das-sport.com/data/dassportnew.html

OG-racing also makes a nice rollbar/cage, it like the DAS bar seems to be a bit more substantial than the autopower or safety-devices products

Theres a company in San Diego called Racer Acc. that if your willing to go down there will cust make it for you for less than a autopower,same design though bolts to floor not rails. I don,t know what they would charge for a frame rail mount.

I got there bar for my cab but definetly lost leg room. I take mine out when not tracking it. Check old posts for phone number if interested. I can't seem to find it at the moment.

i have the autopower bar w/ the bolt out cross member in my 88 carrera. i got it from i/o racing (they advertise in excellence and pano). it was a bit pricey (but didn't do the install myself), but after watching an e30 M3 at my second track event flip and do two somersaults, i thought it was a good idea. coupled with some teamtech quick release 5 point harnesses, i think it's good insurance. can't comment on the floor v. framerail element though as this bar was recommended to me by a friend in the NASA organization and i just went for it.

They cross brace was made that way, to be able to get more seat travel. However, the *top* hit one part of it when down, so I had to notch it.

Mine bolts to the floor and to the rear inner quarters.

I have more than enough leg room with this configuration.

I have an Autopower roll bar, and I think they are just fine. They must be, if they are SCCA, NASA, & PCA approved.

That's where mine is from. My seats still go all the way back with the roll bar in.

i purchased an autopower bar and upon installation, i had my shop supplement it with a welded cross bar for harness installation. they also welded all points that had been bolted on the original design, and welded it to the mounting points that usually are drilled and bolted in.

when it was all said and done, i probably spent as much on my roll bar installation as a DAS bar, or even a custom fabricated one. however, it made me feel much safer than the stock autopower bar that i had purchased.

and, i slept well spending the money because of the ever-present possibility that MY car could be the one rolling over multiple times with ME in it. for the most part, it is always better to spend more, not less, on safety equipment.

You can purchase the Autopower bar with or without a crossbar. I would recommend the cross bar.

Thanks for the info. I ordered the Autopower bar today, with the removeable cross brace and harness brace. Since it is approved by so many organizations, I don't think I can go wrong. Although the DAS bar looks like it would not damage the floor pan in a roll over, I doubt I would want to rebuild after a roll anyways.
