Stencil for painting calipers
Not ready to upgrade my calipers ($$$) but I am painting them and would like to make a small (or purchase) stencil so that I can paint the word "PORSCHE" on them in the Porsche font. I have the font, but no way to make a stencil. The letters will have to be small and I am not sure I could cut out the letters.
Anyone have any ideas? I know I read one post of someone who did this, but I think he had bigger calipers. Thanks

I bought some small Porsche vinyl stencils on e-bay. Good quality. I will check this weekend to see if I still have his address. He has 2 sizes. Small is 2 1/4" from "p" to "e". They should work on SC brakes.

If you are anywhere near an airport, many maintenance facilities have a machine that makes stencils. They are used to paint labels on the airplane (fuel, oil etc) that need to be redone from time to time.
Also have seen them in surplus stores as well. Joe

If you've got the font print the "PORSCHE" on to an appropriate size sticky mailing lable for your brakes. then you'll have to cut out the letters with an exacto knife. the lables are good because they will stick to a painted or clean surface. If your carfull, you can re-use them a few times.
I did a really large "PORSCHE" stencil and uses fabric spray for color on a mat that I put over the rear seats backs when they are in the down position. Had to spray sticky stuff on the back of the stencil to flatten it down to avoid over-sray. Too cool and free. |

Here's another idea - check out your local art supplies store. They will probably have a silkscreening kit that comes with a screen about the right size. Should cost $20-$30.
What you do is print the "PORSCHE" logo out on a clear transparency sheet (Kinkos can do this if you have the artwork). The better quality the printout, the better the results. Then you spread some photoreactive goop on the silkscreen and let it dry in a darkroom. Lay the clear transparency on top of the screen and expose under bright light for 15 minutes or so. Wash out with water. End result, a perfect (and reusable) stencil. Hold the screen firmly (and without moving it) onto the caliper, goop some paint inside the screen, and swipe with a squeegee. Repeat x 4. It takes some practice to get good clean results, holding it steady and lifting without smearing takes a few tries. The only other caveat is the surface of the caliper must be very smooth to get good results. -Boyo

Here's an idea. If ou go to your local sign shop and tell them that you are looking for the word porsche and give a size. Then be sure to tell them that you want the "negative" ..in other words have him peel the letters out of the vinyl and you are left with a stencil. Apply the stencil to yur calipers using the same method as if you were installing vinyl lettering on your vehicle. If your calipers are clean the vinyl will adhere very well and you can then paint in the letters. I will check to see if my brother in law has the "Porsche" font and have him run a couple for you if he can.

Stencils
I have a set (4) of the smaller stencils (21/4" from P to E). I got these for my SC but I'm upgrading to boxster brakes, got a real good deal. Make me an offer.

My first thought was to print them out and cut it with an exacto knife on a harder piece of plastic. I am just not sure I could be perfect with it and any mistakes will be visible. Sign guy with the negative piece may work well. And I can keep the letters for something else.

I don't know when you plan on doing it...but give me the measurements and I 'll give my Brother-in-law a call tonite and ask if he has the font. If he does I'll have him run a few and send them to you.

78silversc,
I would like to purchase the stencils from you if you get some made. Thanks again for helping me with installing my Carrera decals. They look great!! I had a question I thought you could answer. as you know there are somevery thin areas on the end of some letters that are not sticking down and beginning to peel. Gets worse when I wash the car. Do you know what type of glue I could use to fix? Thanks ![]()

No problem....you just have to give me the size that you need. Height and Width. One of my bros-in-laws machines uses True Type Fonts and I know the Porsche font is available in that format. As long as he doesn't run into any snags with the font it should not be a problem. I will know on Monday. As far as $$ ...don't worry about that either...he can use scrap material and I should be able to send it to you in a regular envelope. PDACPA Let me know if you are interested. |

Is it a public domain font? If so, please email it to me, and I can possibly post it on the site...

Sorry guys I was not on this weekend. Mom's Day and kid activities.
I was able to get the font from a prior post. Wayne I am fairly certain it was here. I can post it if there is a way to upload it. I measured my calipers (89 911 3.2L) and they are 2 1/2 Width and 1 1/2 height with respect to the area that I would put the words "PORSCHE." Hate to say, I am going to have to order a second order of paint. The instructions say that the paint is good for 4-8 hours. So I painted the drivers side calipers with two coats and left them with the wheels off for a couple of hours. Went back to put the wheels on and do the other side and the paint was like rubber. Totally useless. They need to adjust the instructions to say use the paint within 4 hours.

Thanks and sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Oh, the measurements in my prior post are the max...so the stencil would need to be smaller.
