Triangle of Death Shopping list
OK. I know this has been discussed ad nauseum, but I did a search and did not find what I needed.
I have the engine out, and am resealing as much as I can. For the "Triangle of Death" I currently have the thermostat O-ring, and the gasket for the oil breather. What other parts do I need to complete this top section? Thanks so much. |
oil pressure sender (for warning light, not gauge)
oil breather hose, unless yours is still supple I'd also do the oil cooler o rings (3) as they are cheap and job is easier with engine out |

Good stuff guys, I already did the vacuum lines two years ago.
And I appreciate the suggestion on doing the oil cooler o-rings. I have the two, I will search to see what the third is. Is it OK to do this, or is it one of those things where "if it isn't broken, don't touch it". Thanks so much. |

they do - be sure you have the fuel hoses clamped with something that will not bite into the rubber
be sure the fuel hoses are rated for ethanol mixes how old are your tires & brake hoses? motor looks pretty - it'd be a shame to run it and get it all dirty... |

Good thread, lets get a proper list together.
So for an 85 Carrera I have ordered the following: oil pressure sender -> 911-606-230-00-M85 Engine Thermostat O-Ring -> 999-707-314-40-M17 oil breather gasket -> 930-107-791-02-M17 Would like some advice on the following... oil breather hose -> There seem to be a few options. Also from the picture above, the red plug is the sender, which is the black? |

Don't forget the fuel/return hoses under the tin
The fuel and return hoses were routed directly under the exhaust heat exchanger dump. This caused the unwanted (dumped) heat to bake the fuel lines and when i got home on the cars maiden voyage, (550 miles) i had an ongoing fuel leak.
The hose was not quite charred but definitely badly heat damaged. Sorry, can't find the photo. hth, chris |
Totally good thread. I really appreciate the answers. Now I can prepare my list with confidence. I do not want to have to do this again any time soon. :)

here is my list while doing a clutch job, the trinity (good parts, it does make a difference), I had to use the green "O" ring on my oil thermostat to keep it from "weeping". I also had issues with my vent hose until I replaced it. Look very close between trans and engine for wetness, now is the time to replace flywheel seal, it is amazing where the oil ends up if this is leaking, very confusing. Again I suggest strongly good parts, I know of what I speak, I had to do it twice, use our host or Porsche parts.

Regarding the Flywheel seal. If I don't see oil leaking, should I leave it alone? Or is it best just to replace it while the engine is out?

If it is not leaking that is going to be a "gut" call on your part. How many miles? I think if it were me I would, the part is not exspensive, mostly labor. You know the slippery slope of "while I'm in there".

PS- CCM911, when my new flywheel seal from local parts store was leaking I thought it was the cam boxes or rocker shafts were leaking, that is why I said it is amazing where the oil ends up when this seal is leaking. By the way I know many will not believe this but I have a leak free '84 Carrera, seriously.
