speedo cable

Speedometer issue. i have a 1969 912 with a 73.5 2.4l with a 901 transmission. last year i changed the clutch on my car and when i did so the speedometer cable got pinched and actually snapped. i ordered a new cable from our host. the new cable seems a little longer and the speed meter under 50 kph is bouncy. is it the cable or the transmission speedo link?

what you guy's think?

I have found that any binding of the drive cable within the housing will cause a bouncing speedo. This could be due to forcing the longer replacement speedo cable to fit in the shorter original path. Try lubricating the cable or locate the place where there is a tight bend and re route it so there is a smoother curve.

I just went through the speedo cable issue on my 71, and found an interesting cause to the problem similar to yours. My speedo worked fine but I was getting a speed dependent, rhythmic knocking sound in the tunnel. First I tried zip tying the cable down better thinking it was the cable flopping around, but that wasn't it. Next I purchased a new cable from PP, and yes it was a little longer. Not only did it not fix the noise problem which was now more behind the speedo than in the tunnel, but now I was getting the bouncing speedo like yours.
Turns out the noise with the new cable was caused by a loose fit of the cable housing into the speedo receptacle such that it would rock side-to-side when the fastening nut (now plastic), was tightened down. A few wraps of aluminum foil in that interface solved that problem. You want that cable exiting the speedo rock solid and not moving around. The extra cable length doesn't help matters, but if you are careful routing it so that there are minimal side loads at the speedo it will work fine.
The bouncing speedo problem was in the angle drive at the transmission. The pressed in cap in the housing had worked it's way out allowing the worm drive to slip back and thus the tab interface to the cable was skipping. Or it may have pressed out due to the tab not in the slot correctly when tightening the cable nut at the transmission. Either way, I pressed it back in with some green loctite and problem solved.

The left end is what interfaces to the cable.
