Gate Shifter for the 915

Before I take off for the evening, I thought I'd leave this image of my Gate Shift kit for discussion/flames/etc. I'll add more later. I'll bring a few with me to the RGruppe meet in Cambria.

Regards,
Sherwood Lee

Hmmm - the new must have accessory for all the disgruntled 915 owners? It looks pretty cool - do you have an extra closeup?

I assume (hope!) it is cheaper than the Robotek, its gotta be! The question is, how much?

Cool.

Looks very similar to the robotec(sp) unit from an operation point of view. I guess you need an extended shaft to make this work? How does the force compare to that required to go into 5th?

I've had my idea running for a few weeks now. It is still working. The return force is not as strong as that required to go to 5th, but it is enough to keep the shifter centered. I'll have to find a bigger spring to increase the force. The spring in the photo is from the main bearing seal I replaced when the engine was out.

Sherwood,
The fab parts look really nice - congrats!
Remember I wanna try it - don't sell 'em all in Cambria

Hey! That was *my* idea! But seriously, I'd posted a comment on Rennlist a while back about something sorta like that. I got the idea when I installed my short shift kit.

Steve,
I just read through you web site re the Gate Shifter and it looks like you have found a solution offered at a reasonable price. Question. Will this work equally as well with any of the short shifters (i.e. Factory or Weltmeister) as well as the OEM shifter? it appears that you have the foactory short shifter but it is hard to tell.

Here's a closeup of the installed shifter kit.

The Gate Shift kit uses the same principle as the Robotek (and Porsche mechanism [5th/rev]). The difference is that this has a 1st/2nd gear gate that mirrors the one for 5th/Rev. This gate also relieves spring tension from the shift mechanism while in 1st and 2nd (same function as 5th and Rev.).

In use, it's transparent save for the spring action to move from 3rd/4th into the 1st/2nd "gate". Shifting from here, it's just a nudge to bring the shift lever into the 3rd/4th shift plane.

I have this installed on both a factory shift housing and a factory short shift housing. The end effect is the same. Shifting is no different from a virgin shift housing other than the shift lever defaulting to the 3rd/4th shift plane while in Neutral.

I've got an intro. price of $139.95 (+ $6.00 shipping/ins.) for a while w/a 30 day money-back guarantee for those of you interested in a price. My website (seinesystems.com) needs to play catchup with this product.

Thanks,
Sherwood

I forgot to answer the question: Will this fit on an aftermarket short shift kit (Welmeister, etc.)?

I haven't installed it on one of these yet. Shouldn't be any different unless they modify the left/right motion as well; in which case I'm uncertain if there's enough range to shift the Gate Shift plate over.

I'm almost ready to whip out the checkbook - but what's the deal with the band clamp?

Thom,
The worm gear clamp secures the shift lever gate on the 1st/2nd gear side of the shifter. This provides some adjustment and allows you to put it on without welding which you could also do after you've made the adjustments.

Cool - one *last* question (promise!)

Does the stock rubber boot fit over it?

Is it available without the spring? The lack of a spring doesn't bother me, but the gates would be nice.

Exclamation

Where do I send the check?

Although, what I'd really like is a Ferrari-style "double-H" gate (probably not possible, given the shifter rod diameter vs its angular displacement between shift planes).

[b]"Does the stock rubber boot fit over it?"[/]

Widebody911,
Questions of any kind are fine. I've installed the boot during prototyping but I haven't road-tested with it on. It's not a tight squeeze. I think I'll leave the shifter exposed so I can look at it while I'm driving. :-). The Gate Shift tension bolt mechanism has a lower mounting profile than the Robotek if that's any help.

"Is it available without the spring? The lack of a spring doesn't bother me, but the gates would be nice. "

Tom,
No, but just leave the tension plate assembly in the bag if that's your personal preference.

BlueSkyJaunte,
You want to send me money? Send me an email. My website ordering page is currently lagging behind this forum.

Thanks,
Sherwood
