'74 door pockets
Hi Guys
I've got a '74 G-Model Targa (built late '73 though) that runs great, but not a great looker due to tired paint. Had one of the standard problems, water leaking in at the door, so I readjusted the triangular window (don't know what you call that in english, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about). Seems to have fixed the leak, so so far, so good. Doing that of course, I had to take off the door pocket and panel. Looked crappy from the front, but after taking them off, I decided they are too far gone to go back on the door. I found some fiberglass doorpockets, but they have to be covered on the outside. Seems like over the years someone tinkered with my original ones, they were covered with velvet. My question now is: what were they covered with originally? The guys at Porsche Classic said carpet, which is what I've seen in most older Porsches at Techno Classica, but I've also heard a few guys say it was vinyl. Anyone here with a '74 that can shed some light on the matter? I'd really appreciate your help. Regards Klaus |

They are covered in the same vinyl as the door cards could be different than the seats. In the 74 it was a blue/ black color NLA . I used black it looks good.

Cool, thanks!
That's how I'll have them done then. Just out of curiosity, when did they change over to carpet? |

My 74 targa door pockets were covered in black vinyl that matches the door pull handle, door top, dash, rear shelf and roll bar cover. The interior of the pockets are flocked in grey velvet.

1974 pockets are a PITA. They mount using plastic blocks with a center "spine" that accepts the mounting screws from the bottom of the pocket going up vertically. The PITA part is that you have little room to move them upwards on the panel as the flip top and handles have a set position.
This means that there is no room between the newer door seals and the lower pocket edge. End results? after opening /closing doors repeatedly the seals get abraded and the vinyl on the edge of the pocket gets damaged. Later design pockets have a flange that allows you to fasten the lower edge directly into the threaded receptacle plates in the door shell. The factory aluminum screws tend to strip, so best to make sure of your threaded plate location and GENTLY install the fastening screws (with grommets) . We use steel screws (with a smidge of grease). Tip: when you remove the door panel, you can see these threaded plates along the inside of the lower door shell. There should be 2 screw holes per plate. One of those holes should have a flat head screw already installed. The purpose is to securely locate the plate in both vertical and horizontal planes. You can adjust position by loosening the screw. Make sure you tighten it as a loose plate will be a source of rattles when going down a bumpy road Also: when covering fiberglass panels, buy double expandable vinyl. You can look at the cloth backing and see it expand cross directions when you stretch it. It will lay down better during glue process BTW- 74 pockets were indeed smooth german black vinyl- NOT blue /black as the door panels were

TRE Cup, you seem to have good knowledge on door pockets. I have a 73 Coupe. Currently running the stock door handles & arm rests without any pockets. I have the post 73 Carrera door panels. Q: Is there a after market door pocket available that will fit the 73 arm rests that look like 74 pockets?

Thanks again for all the information. I was going to ask what PITA means, but I figured it out, by reading on.
![]() I'm going to have a pro cover the pockets, but I'll make sure to tell him what you said. And it's decided, I'll use vinyl. Always wondered why the doors were done in velvet, but the rest of the interior is vinyl. |

A company named Original Fit Interiors made "late" pockets that worked with the 69 - 73 door furniture. Don't know if they are still around. The fiberglass pockets were a nice fit. Perhaps someone picked up the molds if that company is gone.
You do have to block off the lower open portion of the early door panel, as it would leave the inner door open (noise, water, lost stuff you put in the pocket) We actually made a small dam so any stuff put in the pocket would not roll back out of reach.
