I'm about ready to replace my lower valve cover gaskets. Any tricks out there on what to do or avoid.
Thanks. nick '70 911 E |

Buy the new gasket that you can reuse over, and over, and over again. They are worth the expense. If you do buy it, make sure not to overtighten the nuts.

1.Just make sure the sealing surface is free of oil or debris.
2.Use new nuts and washers. 3.Tighten them down in a criss-cross pattern, starting from the middle and working towards the ends. Only tighten to 6 ft. pounds. That is not a whole lot! What I did is went down to the local Haror frieght and purchased a inexpensive inch lbs. torque wrench for $15. Lastly, if you are jacking the car up to do this, make sure it is VERY secure! so the car doesn't fall on you. Unless you already have a 1/4" drive torque wrench, please be aware that the newest factory gaskets with the green silicone bead are tightened to only 6 lb-ft, LOWER TORQUE specs than the sump drain plate!!!
The permanent, red silicone RealGaskets are torqued to only 35-45 inch-pounds! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 08-02-2001).] |
