Hi there,
Can someone tell me how to remove the rear bumper guards on an 86 911? I'm assuming there are going to be at least 2 holes where the wires went through. Has anyone removed these on their car before? Thanks ------------------ Tai |

If you mean the large squarish rubber sections mounted on the rear bumper...
There are 3 nuts on the inside of your bumper that hold each piece on. Get a light and feel around in there. They are pretty small so don't be surprised if you think "Well, these can't be it". First step is to unscrew the license plate lights, unplug the wires, and prepare to feed them throught the hole after removing the bumper guards. Then loosen and remove the 3 nuts holding on one guard, pull it off while carefully feeding the light wires through it's opening. Now repeat on the other side. Try not to drag the bumper gurads accross the pavement, they're pretty pricey to replace. ------------------ Dan Tolley 1987 911 Coupe http://www.cheaterswayside.com/911/gallery.asp?sort=0&userid=294 |

There are more than two holes, are you going to get rid of the rubber bumper things like I did? If so, have someone that can weld with aluminum fill the holes with weld and then all you have to do is grind the excess flat. To get them off you have to take the bumper off, or a least I did.

My original intent was to take the bumper guards or whatever they're called off and see if I could replace them with 2 little license plate lights. If the holes are big enough to require welding work, however, this may not be so easy. I know it's wise to leave them on, but they are probably the ugliest little things on the car.
2 months of ownership and loving every second. Dan: Thanks for the details. Mike: Man does that rear look nice. ------------------ Tai |

I removed the bumper guards from my '83 SC, filled the holes and found a license-plate frame with an integral light, after having considered a variety of made-in-Mexico separate license-plate lights intended for trailers and the like. Found the lighted frame in the Performance Parts catalogue, though maybe Wayne sells one as well. It requires no extra drilling for the wiring.

You should be able to remove the bumper guards without taking off the bumper.
It sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately the paint around/under my guards would not be up to my high quality standards... too many years of accumulated dirt and grime. ------------------ Dan Tolley 1987 911 Coupe http://www.cheaterswayside.com/911/gallery.asp?sort=0&userid=294 |
