Question Help with recurring leaky ignition coil

Car is 83SC with 108Kmiles. I replaced the Bosch coil last summer, and it sprung a large oil leak at the crimp seal 2 months later (500 miles). The one I have now is also leaking, after 9 months (2000 miles). The coil is the correct Bosch # . What gives?

Good thing it has a 1 year warranty. Maybe I have to mount it right side up..............

Porsche Crest

Al,

Have the two coils that failed within the past year been the shiny aluminum-cased version made in Brazil?

The aluminum-cased versions of recent manufacture seem to have a high failure rate. I recently bought an old black German version off an SC for $35 ... eBay purchase, and it wasn't leaking, and works perfectly!

I'm trying to figure out where coils and oils have anything to do with each other.
I know, I know...most cars use electrons to pass power and signals throughout the car and to the plugs and so forth, but Porsche figured out how to use oil.
This explains why, when my interior light went out, I noticed an oil spot on the seat.

Al, are you buying the coils from Weissach (in Vancouver)?
If so, take them back and explain the problem to Uli at the parts counter. He's a great guy, looks after his customers, and is the main reason I deal there.
And.....see ya at the Round-Up!

And the inquisitive kurt b asked:
"I'm trying to figure out where coils and oils have anything to do with each other. "

The coil is a high-voltage transformer, with a primary and a secondary winding. The coil is filled with oil as a dielectric, providing insulation for the windings, as well as a measure of heat dissipation. Many of the large, outdoor distribution transformers you see in utility substations are filled with oil too, for the same reasons.

Early S man, yup it's the shiny latino model........

Doug, I bought the coil at Lordco, no hassle return on one year warranty. I got my SCWDP stickers on, and am looking forward to the Roundup!

Oh well, maybe I'll try to flip it right side up to reduce the hassle and extend it's life up to one year. This way I'll always have a fresh coil!!!
