'74 RS in Targa Tasmania 2012

Rex...just keeps on keeping on...leading again , day 2.
Preparing for the event he washed it , checked the brake fluid...and turned up! A well worn targa story; other teams are up all night fixing and replacing , the Porsche guys shut the door and go for a coldie or two.

A bit of video and results can be found on the Targa results site at

Video*-*Targa News

We'll be at Targa Adelaide in August but I'll be in an E30 M3 navigating not driving the 911 this time.

Cheers Al

Rex's car was written up in the club magazine about a year back (re. club - http://www.pcv.com.au) - I'll dig it out over the weekend and post the detail.

I recall, In particular within the article it mentions that he goes through a a fully rebuilt race prep'd 915 gearbox every 18months.

This is really cool ; good way of checking the terrain (zoom in). Much of the route is pretty remote.

& Rex is good in the wet!

Rally Safe is a brilliant bit of kit, we used it at the first round of the ARC at Calder a month or so ago. Makes life so easy for those of us in the silly seat not to mention safer for all competitors. All cars had them in Targa last year but it seems it is only those wanting to run them this year who have them. Hopefully for Classic Targa Adelaide we'll all have them in.

There are a heap of images from Targa up now at the Targa News Site as well as live updates via the Targa News Facebook page

A lot of guys chucking it off the road today through Cethana, should be an interesting run down to Strahan with the wet.

Some video footage from Leg three from Launceston down to Strahan on the west coast of Tasmania with a little bit of footage of Rex pedalling his car.

Classic Outright leader Rex Broadbent survived a scare on Mt Arrowsmith as well when he finished up in a gutter. Fortunately, his co-driver, Chris Randell, was able to push him back onto the road, minimising the time loss to a minute.

But in the end the Targa veteran cruised to victory in Classic Outright, his 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera securing a sixth straight title having led the field across the entire five days of competition.

Broadbent has become the dominant classic driver of this era and was pleased to extend his record.

“I’m thrilled to win it – six in row is great.”

“It’s been undoubtedly the most difficult Targa that I’ve ever been in, absolutely exhausting.

“Targa is a challenge – every single one. Every time you enter, your past record in the event means nothing. There would be no guarantees if I came back next year that I’d even get in the top 10 – it’s that difficult now.”

Great job Rex! He reckoned the several issues he had with the car were a result of recent stuff he'd tweaked. Anyway , the old Porsche reliability won the day.
The engine pulls 330hp ; 3.4L - twin Webers as cannot source original mechanical FI. Rex is a suspension guru hence the secret (one of many) is his setup including altered suspension points , coilovers and so on. Rear brakes are from a 928 (offset rims caused some problems with road grit) .
Given the type of roads , suspension is the key. That and the ability to control an angry old RWD classic in the wet under pressure!

My son turned 13 today...he will remember the day
