My New SC - Preview

Yesterday my wife and I flew to Raleigh and took possession of my first Porsche. I don't have time for a full intro post now, but I couldn't resist posting a few brief lines and a couple pictures. I'll have more details (and the questions will begin) next week when I get her home.

She's a custom color and looks great (from a little while away.)



This is the best thing about her so far - sure the winding drives have been great. But sharing the excitement of an exotic and beautiful creation with 4 little kids and one 89-year-old grandma is my best memory of the car yet. I took care to make sure the kids new how to pronounce it ("por-sha") and instructed them that 911 SCs were the best kind of car. I took their grandma for a short ride, and she was ecstatic the entire time. She said a 911 had always been her dream car, and she kept asking to get a picture of her in it. She was born in 1923.

Welcome to both the Porsche world and more specificly the Targa world. Great looking car. Though, the first thing to do, unless you like the look, would be to lose the black headlight rings. Either get them in chrome or paint them to match the car.
One of the many things that impress me about the 911 culture is that personalizingmaking changes to your car is not considered a sin. No one gets bothered if you make wheel changes or "back date" your car.

SC's imported to the U.S. came with Fuchs that had black centers, and "sugar scoop" headlight buckets, black framed fog lights, and rode a tad higher than ROW spec. Personally I liked the look of the mid 70's cars with the petals on the Fuchs being silver, so I painted mine. I really didn't like the sugar scoops, so I replaced them with chrome ringed H4's, and replaced the black benzeled fog lights witht he chrome rings from an old Mercedes SL.

The point here is, you have a great looking car as is. Don't worry about upsetting the "establishment" if you decide to make any changes.

My budget is very limited, so I don't plan to do any cosmetic work that isn't required. This is a daily driver, so my first order of business is an oil change after my 1000 drive home. Then I'll touch up the paint, wax it real well, and work on getting the heater working. Must be warm in these cold Wisconsin days!

If you haven't already, buy 2 books. A Bentley Publishing manual for the SCs and "101 Projects for your 911" by our host.

If you didn't already know, when you go to do your oil change, you will need 10.57 quarts of oil and get the Mahle oil filter. You will also need a lot of rags, a huge container to catch the rushing oil coming out of the oil tank. Ideally a goose neck oil funnel to put the new oil in. Don't forget the oil drainplug on the sump. There is about another 2 quarts in there as well.

Great looking car and i really love the sharing part....

whenever I see kids looking at my car I always pop it open and say, wanna sit in it? (naturally pending parental approval) - I think sharing these cars is as wonderful as spending time in the garage late at night alone with them....

Wow what a great story and pictures.

Sometimes I forget how special a Porsche 911, even an older one, is to people. Get prepared for lots of admiring glances and instant friendships at every gas pump.

Oh one more thing...don't let Grandma drive.

Awesome drive you're making.. saw the other thread for "best route form NC to Wisc.." that's a haul, but what better way to get to know your new car!

Looks like the PO did som suspension work as it sits really nice.. the color is not Casis red.. its to dark with not enough violet. Think maybe Garnet Red Met?

I really like the color, since it is a bit unusual. I would paint the wheels black or go to Fuchs, but that is just my personal preference.

looks like ziegelrot metallic (brick red), same color as my 83. it was a special order color only and seems to change based on the amount of sunlight out, to the point it almost looks black at night. good pickup.
