Hi Nostatic. I guess I'm pretty average in my jobs I tackle. I haven't actually done the valves but I've read the book (a bit like flying an aeroplane I guess - I've read the book of course I can), but I'm going to do them soon. I pulled the car to bits for a color change type repaint and do all other things. Bill '79SC.

Where does building a car from the tub up come in?
I guess the intimate knowledge selection. Does this count if you use experts to supervise and jump in when you're having trouble?

Nope...but for good reason. We are in escrow for a new house that shrinks my wife's commute down to 3 minutes (from 1 hour each way), mine down to 20 minutes (from 50 minutes each way), and feeds to a good public school for our son (who starts 1st grade in the fall). Money is tight since we had to make a non-contingent offer (at over asking price...the housing market in LA is absolutely nuts). Our present house is on caravan today, open this weekend, and hopefully will also sell for over asking.

Once everything is settled and our house sells, the wife's car gets paid off, and my search moves back into full swing. And that is per the boss :)

Where is the "Tackles more than capable of"?

I'm kind of backwards. Rebuilt an engine from the crank up and overhauled a transmission but have yet to take the front or rear suspension apart. Rebuilt three shift couplers now though. Jim

How about "waiting for engine/tranny to break so that I can get a chance to rebuild it" ?

That would be my vote too. Never thought I would pull my own engine, untill I needed a clutch.

You know, I believe I'd like to become one of the minority. The checkbook only brigade. When a powerball lottery prize was really up there, I was BSing with a mechanic friend...mentioned one of the things I'd put on my fantasy list would be the top of the line Snap-On rollaway, crammed with tools. His response was that if he won, he'd give me all his snap-on tools..."Because if I won a lottery, I'd NEVER work on a car again." Hmmm, I do believe Steve had a point there...:D

I pretty much do everything on my car, with the exception of alignments/corner balance, and set the Co, since I don't have the equipment.

Of course, without this AWESOME board, I probably wouldn't tackle half of them.

And if the motor or tranny ever gave up the ghost, I would give it a whirl.

I do almost everything to my own cars, including modifications and engine rebuilds when necessary. I hate having someone else touch my car.

Until recently I could even do my own alignments until I sold the machine. I still have a bear 4 gas exhaust analyzer, so I got that covered (but I still adjust it by ear :-)
Sometimes I try to do things I have no business doing, but that is how I learn.

I'd say my level is about average...though most of the work I've done was on my other cars, never my 911! Until it breaks, that is!

Oh...my 911 project...it mainly needs body work. Lots of it.
