Introduction + 915 stuck in gear??
Hi,
I have just bought my second 911 :)(this one is a 1976 Carrera 3) and I picked it up from the shippers today in Sydney. It had a new 3rd gear synchro and clutch fitted just before it went into the container in the UK and it drove well then. The shipper drove it approx 200 meters then couldn't get it into reverse although the reverse light was on. It feels like it will go into different gears but will not drive, it feels like the wheels are locked or the handbrake is on. The gear lever at one point felt free then was stuck in first and is now free again. We had to push the car onto the trailer with me holding the clutch down. Is it likely gear shift linkage or could it be stuck in two gears. The car has about 100000 miles on it. |
Easy things first, check the coupler and go from there.

And there is also a pin that you can get to that should release the trans. I think this is due to your being stuck in TWO gears at once. I think you need to remove the reverse light sender so you can then push in the pin.
I am sure others here will be able to provide a more eleoquent step-by-step. And if you search, I am sure you will find a few threads. Main thing, don't panic until you get in there and try a few fixes. |
911 Fixes Self!
Thanks for the replies. We left the car on the trailer overnight as it was dark by the time we got home. The gearbox had freed itself during the 200km trip south yesterday. I have only driven it a few metres today as it is not registered yet but all seems ok driving wise. However the gearlever seems much looser than on my old 79 SC ( I did notice this when I test drove it in the UK) and I think there is a bit of play where the rod connects to the gearbox. I think I will redo the bushes etc and tighten everything up. I have an SC Bentley on it's way as I gave my old one to the buyer of my old SC and will search here re adjustments.

being that it was recently apart, i suspect that one or both of the diagonal detents are in the wrong position. the detents lock one shaft in neutral when the other one is moved fore or aft.

Another Carrera 3.0 gotta see it. |
Diagonal Detents?
John, Can the diagonal detents be corrected with the transmission still in the car or is it a removal only job?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1335567660.jpg

If it is the detentes, the entire transmission will have to come apart. Unless there is some magic trick I haven't heard about.
I would get the transmission locked, as you described, then take off the bottom plate that is the internal shift fork. Then confirm that you really are in two gears at the same time. |
I would check the bushings before any thing. Also while you are checking the ones under the shifter, check the rod that connects the shifter to the transmission mine was cracked when I got my 3.0 SC and I could not engage 2nd. It was a quick fix to what I though were serious trans issues. There is a pin that connects the cup that holds the stick, to the rod. The pin is welded to the rod, my rod had split and the pin had come out. I would also change the transmission fluid, you never know whats in there or how old it is. Also if any chunks (of gears) come out while draining it you will know if there is a more serious issue.

Hey Bill, there are a few of us who have imported 911s from the UK so drop me a line if you need any assistance with getting it registered.
I expect you will put it on historic rego? Your car is mesmerizing, the colour is to die for. I also had my gear box rebuilt in the UK before it was shipped. However it still doesnt feel right. Im going to replace the bushings and also the clutch helper spring at some stage. But for the moment just drive and enjoy! Cheers Ed |
