just curious about rennlist vs. pelican
Don't want to start a controversy, but i've browsed this list and rennlist before starting to post here and i've found this as of this evening :
rennlist: 911 forum: 15550 posts 993 forum: 27892 posts pelican: 911 forum: 175540 posts 993+ forum: 486 posts I think i've gravitated here because it seems like the people on this board would rather work on their old porsche than eat. Maybe even ![]() |

I don't know what happened, but everyone just seemed to migrate here. The rennlist.org 911 forum is all but dead.

I'm new to these 911 sites. Kept seeing references to Rennlist so I ventured over for a look-see and decided to do some price checking. Here at Pelican the shopping procedure makes total sense. There, I couldn't figure it out

No doubt, Pelican is the center of the Porsche web based universe.
The real action at Rennlist is on the mailing list(s). Use Pelican for the boards and then subscribe to the mailing list at Rennlist then you have the Porsche cyber-world covered . . . IMO. Best, Kurt |

The mailing list is where one might ask a question at Rennlist. Here at the Pelican board, we post a question and typically get a speedy response. The Rennlist web board community is pretty slow to respond . . . if ever. The Rennlist mailing list is a great resource, IMO, and a great way to keep on top of developments in the Porsche world . . . and to shoot the shiet with some very wise and knowledgeable Porsche folk. The Rennlist mailing list does veer off topic from time to time but that is what happens when a community is thriving. I read the Rennlist mailing list, but I participate here at the Pelican board. IMO, that sums it up. Best, Kurt |

I am also a Rennlist defector. The numbers initially quoted in this thread pretty much sum it up.
Rennlist is very cliquish. A bunch of wealthy guys with 993's+, who scoff the newbie and the majority of the threads are useless ramblings. The forum isn't much better. Pelican seems to host mainly older 911's. Guys who tend to do their own work, are less judging, and all around easier to get an answer out of. For almost two years I skimmed the daily Rennlist digest and found myself reading 2-3 threads at best. Not worth the time to find those few interesting topics amist 100+ other ramblings. Pelican's forum is more to the point; I follow almost 2/3 of the posts on here. Colby |

A year or two ago, I was a Rennlist regular. I quit instantly when the vaunted John Dunkel posted a hysterical message yelling at me for saying something nice about an excellent supplier that he thought had been in effect spamming the list, which I don't think he had been. There were about 10 guys on Rennlist who were excellent, some of whom I still keep in touch with, and a million jerks.
Delighted to have instantly discovered Pelican. Stephan

are you guys talking about the same place?
http://forums.rennlist.com i respectfully suggest that the above posters are incorrect. rennlist is an active thriving forum, just like here. in fact, most of the posters from the 944 board here have migrated to rennlist. i do not know why. the 964 board on rennlist is the best, here it is basically nonexistant. i attribute this to the 964 moderator at rennlist that is knowledgeable and an active poster. as far as kurtstarnes, "slow to respond" i'd suggest he hasn't visited the rennlist in a few years. also, i guess i have not encountered the "million jerks" who are supposedly there. not a commercial for rennlist, just the truth. ![]() |

Although I usually only frequent the 911 forum on Rennlist, I have to agree with the majority. Pelican is far superior with way fewer jerks.

My two cents: Rennlist has a great 964 forum, a good 993 forum, and a so-so 911 forum. The rest I'm not familiar with. Responses to questions posted on these forums are generally pretty fast. Pelican's 911 forum is awesome, but with some serious flaming from time-to-time (duck here!). The 964/993 forum..if it's not dead, it's at best on life support. The Pelican 911 forum is interesting reading for a newbie, non-wealthy 993 owner such as myself and I spend more time lurking here than on Rennlist. For 993-specific technical help I'll most likely go to the Rennlist 993 forum.
Both sites are great! Regards, Jim 1995 Black 993 |

I started on RennList, first time I came to Pelican I was stunned by all the activity, interesting threads etc.
The only reason to go to the Rennlist 911 board now is for the V-8 SwampMonster threads! |

This has been the best board I have found so far. We have only had our 930 since the end of last summer so I have been trying to get a lot of information about it and driving advise. This board is really "user friendly." It has a wide variety of topics, a variety of people with many levels of experience, a ton of excellent pictures of peoples porsches, and people seem pretty open to helping new owners.

I am on ther rennlist 911 e-mail list, and I post here also.
I would like to say that John Dunkle does an outstanding job with very little reward. I find useful information here, as well as on the rennlist. I would hate to have to do without either one. BTW, I am a paying member on rennlist. most of those who use the service do not pay. If they did the right thing and coughed up the few dollars a year, Mr. Dunkel would be able to do even more helpful and amazing things for all of us. We all have a responsibilty to support those who work hard to provide these boards and lists. I placed an order last night from Pelican, so I figure I paid my dues for a couple months :-) Like they say, there aint no free lunches. If we want to use these tools for free without any return consideration, they might some day go away. We all would hate to see that happen. Sam Gore (off soap box, for now ;-) |

One should not put all of his eggs in just one basket, the Rennlist is just another decent source of chat, true not as active as Pelican, but fine never the less. It adds more points of view to these subjects.
I find many posters from Pelican in Rennlist including our moderators, there must be reason for it!

I'm going to side with Steve and Colby on Rennlist. I too, have been flamed pretty good when someone didn't agree with what I wrote. Lately it seems as though the Rennlist 911 board has dropped substantially in the quality of posts and subject matter.
This board isn't perfect, either. It has it's own little clique, too. I've noticed that the clique only responds to thier buddies on posts and ignores everyone else. In general, one does meet a better class of car enthuisiast here and at Rennlist. I don't see people using the letter n in place of "and", or u instead of writing "you". |

I now visit both sites. Went to Rennlist when Wayne had the ISP problems. Still visit it from time to time, but this one is "home" to me. Maybe I didn't visit Rennlist long or often enough? Only went to the 911 forum, but didn't notice anything really nasty or mean...just not as active as this board, not quite as diverse in opinions and/or advice.

Both Rennlist and Pellican Parts offer great boards. I notice alot of the same posters on both boards. Sometimes the same questions from the same posters.
No doubt that PP leads the 911 board. Rennlist for the 993 board. I don't know why It just seems to be that way. I visit both daily, at least when I am at work, and will continue to do so. You can never have enough info.

The few times I've visited Rennlist, it seems that many users of both boards post identical thread topics on both boards. Consequently, I haven't found a good reason to visit Rennlist on a regular basis. -- Curt

I predict there will soon be a thread on Rennlist about the Pelican Parts board. Should be interesting reading.
