Pop sound front end
 

Does anyone know what might cause a single "pop" sound on a hard left turn or when the right front wheel goes over a parking lot speed bump? I can hear it very clearly up through the floor.

I had that happen once on an older 911 and it was a rusted front pan. The A-arm was actually pushing thru at the front. Maybe more unlikely on an 86 but something to check none the less.

I have the same thing going on right now. Try pushing up and down on the front fender and see if you can get the pop to sound. I can hear it when I really push on it. I think it's a worn out top shock mount, I can clearly feel it by putting my hand on the top shock bolt under the hood.

Check to make sure it isn't a loose sway-bar. Don't assume it is the front just because it sounds like it is coming from the front. Sound can play tricks...

I had a popping sound coming from the front - could have sworn it was the front.

It was a loose rear sway bar drop link.

I jacked up the front passenger side of my car and removed the wheel. I looked at the front sway bar bushing and I can see daylight through to the other side between the rubber and the sway bar itself. You can just see the gap on the bottom right of the sway bar in the picture.Would this cause a pop sound loading and unloading on a bump?

Check tie rod ends and ball joints. This sound is a classic sign.

The steering is very tight and there is no play in the ball joint. The gap is substantial between the sway bar and the rubber.

I doubt the sway bar moving in the rubber bushing is the problem.
Loose gland nut on the strut?

Glad you asked this. I have the exact popping sound when making hard lefts as well. Sounds like it's coming from the front, as you described.

I'll check on these suggestions tomorrow or Tuesday, hopefully, and see what I can find.

Just to finish off this thread, I discovered what was causing the popping sound. It was the two allen nuts on the front sway bar attaching it to the body that were loose enough to cause the popping sound when the sway bar loaded. Tightened them right up and and hit the same parking berms that used to cause the popping noise and no sound now at all. Silence. It is amazing how clear things become when you can put a car on a hoist and have the time and distance to really look at things as opposed to laying on your back in your driveway with the bottom of the car a few inches from your face. The whole vehicular world opens up before your eyes.
