Replacement Seat Foam

Does anyone know where I could get stock seat replacement foam for a 1973 911 T? You can find replacement seat covers just about anywhere, but I have yet to see replacement foam or replacement springs...

I am seriously thinking about reupholstering the seats myself. Are there any other tools other than hognosed pliers that I might need? Thanks for any help...

Bill

Bill you shouldn't need the hog nose pliers if you have the stock seat. If you seats are like the stock ones in my '72 the edges of the seat material have a cardboard edge that tucks into a metal lip at the bottom of the seat. When I rebuilt my seats I went to a fabric store an bought dense fiber batting. I used that to build up the low spots on the seats.

i "re-foamed" my seats following an article in Porsche Wolrd. it contains a brief step-by-step process using original '68 p seats (non sports type) and supplies from local auto upholstery shop. if i can find the mag i can scan and send to you. the seats are much more comfortable now.

HMM...when I rebuilt my seats, I used the hog rings to pull the material inward on the seat backs. If you don't do that the insert on the front of the seat backs will be puffy and not tight against the foam and frame. They hold the the fabric to the springs/rods in the frame. Job looks home-made if you don't use them.

They used hog rings on the orginal seats. Lots of them. Don't know how you'd do it otherwise. Got my rings & pliers at the local harware store. Not much use for them after the job is done. Total cost for rings and pliers $8.00.

Kurt is right though, there is a lip around the bottom of the seats where the cardboard that's attached to the fabric/vinyl/leather slips under to hold it tight. Got to squish the seat down to get it in.

You can have my pliers and left over rings if you want them. Just pass them on to the next guy.

Trick....when you do the seat backs, turn them inside out and upside down first , and slowly and gently start at the top and ROLL them on down. This asumes you have the intergal seats/headrest style. If you don't you will split the new fabric at the base of the seat back because the seats are wider at the top than at the bottom. If you don't understand this, I'll detail it further for you.

I am planning to recover the seats in my '77 Carrera 3.0. Although I have done recovering on older seats, I wonder if anyone has specific advice for doing Porsche seats, i.e.; how do the various plastic parts (e.g. tilt handle) come apart most easily, what order to tackle it all in, etc.

Can anyone advise or point me to articles, diagrams, threads, etc.?

Thanks for the help guys. I purchased a pair of angled hog nosed pliers and "stretching" pliers. I also purchased new "staples." All I have to do now is purchase new seat covers, seat foam, etc.

Okay Guys,

Count me in on the seat re-upholsery. I have an '84 with Sport Seats and I'm about a day or two away from ordering my seat leather and hog ring pliers. I've never done this before but am willing to give it a shot. I've post several times on the board about finding someone that's done sport seats but not been able to find anyone for good advise and tips. I think we should try to help each other here and I'm planning on taking pics of my process if I can borrow a camera from my niece. If anyone has done sport seats before speak up.

This place sells seat foam replacements:

http://www.worlduph.com/porsche5.htm#SEAT

I've never delt with them, so I'm not sure about quality, etc.

Thanks for the link. The company did not list seat foam cushions for my 1973 911 T though...

the article deals with seats from a '68 912 but the same principle should apply through the years. my advice would be to use a very thin piece of high density foam as not to lose what little bolster there is with this model. the article served its purpose as a temp solution to new seats.
