muffler strap question(s)
 

Hi!

I now have my OEM Dansk muffler to bolt on, but have since noticed that my straps are stainless steel.The muffler is painted, and not the polished stainless steel type.

It was brought to my attention that there is a reaction between the two different metals upon contact. Will these straps make my new muffler wear quicker than normal? Should I get different straps , and are all Porsche 911 muffler straps stainless?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. The Dansk seems very well built, and I do not want to damage it over a small detail.

If you drive your car in wet, salty conditions it most likely will accelerate the corrosion of the muffler due to galvanic corrosion. As the paint on the muffler is rubbed off by the straps the localized corrosion will be even more accelerated (large anode, small cathode effect). Either way we're talking years for complete failure to occur.

If your car is a garage queen then you don't have a concern.

MY Dansk is stainless under the paint....try removing the grey paint and see what's underneath.....S/S is also non magnetic. Use a magnet to check....

BTW, if I like the Dansk better than the Bursch, the Bursch will be up for sale. It has less than 500 miles on it.

How quiet is the Bursch? I get dirty looks from the quiet tracks.....I might be interested in it....

I only have an old holy stock to compare it with so far. I can record wav files and post them on the board for others to listen to.

The bursch sounds very low pitched, and less raspy than the holy stock unit I had. Its nice, I just like the fittiment of the stock unit better...I think!

...for the record, my cheaper painted Dansk OEM muffler is not stainless...as a cow magnet stuck to it while it did not stick to my kitchen sink or saucepan lid! :)

...but then again the magnet sticks to my stainless muffler straps.

It is very well made though.

Not all stainless steels are non-magnetic.
Anyway, I wouldn't worry about galvanic corrosion. The mild steel of the muffler, and the SS straps are not that dissimilar.

BTW, Reg....what the hell is a Cow Magnet???

Cows tend to eat all kinds of things that they should'nt.

BTW, they are very good magnets, and are shaped like a suppository. :eek:

OK Reg, I'll take your word on it. I'm a city boy, and have only ever seen pictures of them critters on my milk carton. ;)
