Porsche Crest Front vent grille seal.

I just ordered a front vent grille seal. I thought that this was the seal between the front vent frame / screen and the body. But now I've seen it, I think it's the seal between the fresh air inlet box and the body.

When I removed the grille there was some kind of black (perished) seal. Can somebody tell me what it was (partnumber or material - perhaps it was some kind of double sticky tape?).

Thanks,

Kees.

I don't think there ever was a seal between th vent screen and the body. The seal that you purchased does on the fresh air box to seal the fresh air box to the body.

Thanks Steve.

So there was no seal. But what was the black stuff between the grille and the body?

I'm taking my car apart now to paint. I also had the black tape behind the mesh. I think it was just cosmetic to cover the metal that would show through the mesh. Maybe cuts down on squeaks/rattles too. Looks like you can substitute black duct tape ot gasket material for this.

Steve is correct. I've had mine off several times and have even replaced the entire fresh air unit. To be honest, I thought that seal you have was N/A. Interesting. Anyway, as long as that seal is good and you have the drain-tube attached to the bottom, you should be in good shape.

FWIW, I sprayed the bars that it attaches to, and the inside of the fresh air box with flat black. Looks very clean and nice. Can't see it through the screen (which I also resprayed with semi gloss black). Painted the screews, too. And they say I'm anal. Huh!

I'm replacing this seal this coming weekend, is there any trick? Why, well mine is leaking water into the trunk.
Thanks

There is a sticky cloth type seal between the body and mesh screen. I just took mine apart to clean and paint the mesh. The seal fell apart and,IMO not important to replace. I believe it was there to ease manufacturing and assembly.

Small pads behind the vertical bars to protect the paint check PET for part numbers but they are NLA last time I checked, just use a thin strip of rubber

I remember the pads when I took my car apart to paint, but I'm just trying to get hints on how easy/difficult it will be to replace that foam rubber gasket in the pic above.
