An interior detail tip and exterior tip

Hey all

I am unhealthyliy addicted to maintaining my car- it is very very clean- still single i have time to do it so why not?

last night (at the Grady get together) a couple guys asked me how my paint looks so good all the time and how the interior smells naturally clean, not air fresher style. so . . . here's the quick answers.

INTERIOR NATURALLY CLEAL SCENT: air fresheners generally suck. what i do is take a dryer sheet ( i use a genric brand) that has a "mountain" smell- anyway, i rub it across the surfaces of the car- mostly the carpets and mats and vinyls- i leave the leather alone- i also put a sheet under each seat- they will last about 2 months. the smell will not overwhelm and actually you don't really smell it- it kinda works more like an odor eliminator. best of all a box of 80 sheet is less than 5 bucks compared to 3 for one little air freshener thingy.

EXTERIOR: My car in BLACK. The paint is as just about as good as anything i've seen except museum/ show cars. Many think it is a show car or just had a 200 dollar detail though i drive it every day. once every few months i do a full detail, clay, sealant, and carnuba. then, i just spend 5 mins every other day on it. it always looks just detailed and i love driving it that way.

my exterior paint "secret" is a detail spray that includes small amounts of clay and other nice additives. it includes a small amount of carnuba and acutally deepens the gloss notably. it is far superior to any detail spray ive tried and ive tried lots. i didn't think it could be as good it sounds but it exceeds my expectatios based on past experience with detail sprays. i acutally recently met the manufacturer at their warehouse (though i have no affiliation at all . . .) as they are here in LA and they are good people- find it here.

http://www.chemicalguys.com/Quick_Detail_Final_Inspection_Sprays_And_Clay_Lubr icants_s/6.htm

anyway, use a microfiber towell only and wipe in one direction so as to not create swirls. if you have a dark car especially, you will not regret trying this stuff.

well, good luck.

john,
Back in college i spilled power Tide all over the back seat of my car. Even after I vaccumed it out, that car always smelled good after that! I started using dryer sheets as well after that. great trick

The spary I use

the one that is by far the best is the mango colored one- they are call it ONE- it actually smells fantastic- they sell smaller bottles as well- maybe email them or call them- i got the big one after a few small ones went away-

they have a fantastic sealant called JetSeal 109- under their sealants- i use that and top with their 50/50 wax which is a butter -like wonderfully easy to apply show wax- thin and deep gloss- protects but the sealant does the major work- the wax makes the color deep and pop- you could of course use the sealant followed by any wax- i have used nxt by meguiars and was quite impressed and the price is low compared to fancy waxes-

OK, I've ordered a ton of product; we'll see if they ship to Canada, otherwise I'll have to ship to my California friend and have him forward to me?
Anyway, stuff looks awesome! Why not try it.
Cheers,

johncarlos2003, Thanks for the tips!!

You opened up my curiosity with your statement....

"once every few months i do a full detail, clay, sealant, and carnuba."

At the Chemical Guys website, http://www.chemicalguys.com/, can you tell us what products and especially what tools you use to clay, seal and wax your car?

I don't trust detailers and would rather do this myself, but I just bought the car last Nov. and it had a complete detail ($700) by the PO before I bought it.

I want to detail it before winter arrives here in Colorado and I have the time to do it, but need someone like you to help with how and what tools work best.

Thanks!!!!!!!! Oh, and what do you use on your wheels?

Jerry

I've been using the dryer sheets for several years now. Not overwhelming at all. In fact, just a clean, pleasant smell. Mix that in with the wonderful smell of an older Porsche and you've got success, IMO.

Thanks for the exterior tips too. I'll have to check it out when I get back home.

Ordered a box of stuff from the Chemical Guys this weekend.
They wouldn't accept anything but US addresses, so I typed in my entire address with city, province and country in the street lines and noted for them to email me if they couldn't ship to Canada.
They phoned me today and told me no troubles, they're shipping out my order pronto.... directly to Canada; 'eh!
Cheers,

Glad they're getting it out to Candada- they ship worldwide I think- I know the wholesale a lot to Asia and sell a good amount in Australia and parts of Europe-
Anyway, you asked about what products I use:

1) Wash- any good auto wash will do here- no dish soap!

1) Clay- Use in conjunction with ONE spray or really any detail spray- cheapo stuff is okay here you just need lubricant and lots of it! I use a mother's or meguiars clay bar and have also used one from chemicalguys- point here is, just do it- you might not always need the clay- i keep my car pretty clean always so not much contaminent

2) Seal- I use chemguys JetSeal 109- it's awesome- do one coat, let sit 20 mins, then a 2nd coat- wait 20 mins before removing

3) to get a brilliant deep shine i finish with carnuba- i use chem guys 50/50 wax- it's not cheap- i think 48 a can but it should last a few years- it is very thin and wonderfully deep in glow- i do two coats- the 2nd a few days after i apply the 1st- leave at least 2 hours on before you remove-

4) Wheels- i use the ONE spray here and just wip[e them clean- i have not done it yet but the guys at ChemGuys suggest using the JetSeal 109 on the wheels- hmmm. . .??? might try it next time 'round . . .

in between, i maintain with the ONE spray- I only use microfiber towells and try to generally wipe in one direction so as to not create swirls-

that's basically the routine-

Sure- and yes, all by hand. only time id use a buffer is to compound out fine scratches, etc.

i do not allow anyone else to touch the car's paint except one man who i know is a master with a machine and i only do that as needed- so far, once in two and a half years.

looking forward to pics!

I'm pretty picky about keeping my Porsche and daily drivers clean. I go through the stripping, polishing, waxing, leather conditioning, etc, always use good products, and pretty much dare anyone to walk by my car without admiring the paint, wheels, and interior. However, a few years ago, I was at a BMW motorcycle rally and I saw an absolutely GORGEOUS 1976 R75 with an old Vetter Windjammer fairing and Wixom fiberglass saddlebags. The whole thing was done up in black and looked like it had been dipped in black paint and was still wet. The owner of the bike saw me down on one knee and giving the machine a detailed once-over. He came over and introduced himself.....a very fit 75 year-old fellow who was only too happy to talk about his bike. I asked him who did the paintwork, at which time he told me it was the original factory paint job from 1976. The odometer showed about 85,000 miles and he had addressed stone chips by overfilling, wet-sanding, buffing, etc. I asked him what type of wax he used and he promply went into a saddlebag and produced a spray can of Johnson's Jubilee Kitchen Appliance Wax. He said that this was the only wax product to ever touch the paint since new. He further explained that it fills minute polishing and drying scratches, and while it doesn't give the long-lasting protection that a carnuba wax might, it takes only moments to apply. I found a couple of cans of this at a small neighborhood hardware store and bought them. I tried it on my motorcycles and the results were spectacular. I still use it on my motorcycles and a couple of my riding buddies now do the same. I still put a coat of carnuba on if I'm going to take a trip due to harsher conditions while travelling, but for weekly cleaning and/or detailing, I still use the Johnson's Be that as it may, I cannot bring myself to spray Johnson's Jubilee Kitchen Appliance Wax on my beautiful Porsche. I've had the can close a couple of times, but my hand starts to shake and I break out into a cold sweat.

interesting note. funny story-

carnuba will give a a realtively short coverage- if inside mostly etc. it's good alone

the sealants need only be done 1 or 2 a year- the carnuba on top makes a bit of extra coverage and give that deep shine-

i wanna try that kitchen stuff on my stove! i even waxed my lawn mower once!
