Perhaps your earlier car is different (mine is a 69)?
There is a very small, vertical screw that passes up through the 'arm'. That will release the mirror portion. Of course the base uses adhesive to the glass.

Not on a '67. The base of the mirror is attached to the roof with screws. The glued mirrors came later.

If there's no screws visible, maybe you've got a '68 mirror, which is mounted on a break-away bracket. There's spring loaded pins up inside the bracket that hold the mirror in. To remove it try (carefully!) to pry it down with a screwdriver. Or, if you're confident the spring loaded pins aren't rusted solid, give it a good yank.
A picture would be helpful.

A break-away '68 mirror has a "brushed" finish, while the '67 and earlier were bright chrome. No?
