I've owned my '87 911 Cab for a whopping 1 month and I just found out I'll be relocating from MN to NYC. I'll have a BMW 540i for my daily driver, and am wondering what to do about the Porsche.
Anyone in the area know of a garage available, possibly on Long Island near the LIRR, that I could store it for a reasonable price? (I have friends on LI, only no garages.) It's probably outrageously expensive in NYC. If it's too much of a pain, I might have to sell. Any advice from anyone in the NYC area is appreciated. ------------------ '87 911 Cabriolet, Silver, "Pure" Stock |

There's a self storage complex on the LIE near exit 62. That may accomodate a vehicle in one of the bays. It's a shor t taxi ride from the Ronkonkoma station. Keep the car.

I can't help you with finding parking in NY, but if you do want to sell it, let me know. I also live in Mpls, and would like to take a look at it.

all i can offer to you is GOOD LUCK. i've seen the condition of Porsches in NYC and it scares the crap out of me. everyone i know in the Metro NY PCA has a nice little exclusive spot squirreled away somewhere. offhand, these parking spaces cost the same if not more than an apartment upstate.
i hope you can find something reasonable. some people to ask about it would be the Metro NY PCA. http://www.metronypca.org/ again, good luck! obin |

Hey Ragtop,
Welcome to New York! I'm friends with Marc and we both park our early 911's in NYC. Marc found this garage at 50th and 9th near the worldwide plaza building that lets us park our own cars (no teenage valet ripping around narrow parking corridors and grinding gears in your car), and is *relatively* inexpensive - $250 a month (yes that's cheap, especially for the fairly location). Also may want to see what happens to your insurance when you show the car as being parked/driven in NYC. Let me know if I can help you out. Brad |

Hey Ragtop!
Congrats on your move! You may want to take Brad up on his advice and store your car for $250 clams a month. That's the cheapest I've heard of on the West Side. Used to be tough area over there, but is pretty nice now ("Hell's Kitchen"). Keep in mind, that when I come into NYC for a meeting for a few hours, I usually end up paying $35-$45 bucks a pop, so $250 for the month is GREAT! I know others who are paying $500/month or more. Just make sure you number crunch your new "living expenses" in the overpriced, and eye gouging big apple. It's so damn expensive there. HAVE FUN!! JON '85 black targa |

Ragtop,
I also live in NYC and am in the process of buying an '86 Targa. In terms of garages, you could try giving a call to 800-421-6858, ask for Jose. They basically are a "garage consortium" in NYC and have access to over 150 garages in various locations and price ranges. A friend let me know about this group, and I don't know how good it'll be (Jose is still doing a search for me) but he was very understanding of my love for the 911 and was trying to get me in some of the "better" locations. Insurance. . . My best quote so far has been Geico, full coverage for <$100/month. Good luck. ------------------ Rich razgaitis@hotmail.com |
