How to remove flag style mirrors without cutting wires?
 

Does anyone know how to do this? I"m pretty sure I have to disconnect the wiring from the mirror itself and leave the wiring in the door. I just can't see how the mirror comes apart to get to the connectors. It's a 1987 911. Thanks

If I am correct there is a maybe a 3 inch plastic ring that holds the mirror on. You can access the ring from the hole in the bottom of the flag part of the mirror. Use a flat blade screwdriver and loosen the ring. Once the ring is loose the mirror comes out and you can get into the innards pretty easily.

If it is the same as the 86 951 I worked on it's pretty easy.

There is a tool needed, which I did not have. You need this special tool to release the 6 wire connectors from the white round plastic connector. The connector is called a weatherpak connector. I will dig up the link, I just did this about a month ago. Resist the temptation to cut the wires.

Note the mention about 10 posts from the top about a tool called Delphi Weatherpak - its a little 2-3 dollar item, and you cannot remove the mirror without either cutting wires, or getting your hands on this tool.

I have done the mirror wire removal thing with a jewelers screwdriver to push on the tabs. Done it on both sides and it worked fine. Take a picture of which wires go where before doing this.

I used a straight pick to help convince the plug ends out of the plastic connector. I wish I'd drawn a schematic. Never could get them to work right after.

Irrelevant now. I cut the wires when I installed the aero mirrors. They are manual now.

Thanks guys! That's just the info I needed. I just ordered the right tool to do the job. I managed to get the mirror off and found the 3 screws that hold the mirror housing together. Once disassembled I found the connector. They sure don't make it easy.

I'm in the process of stripping the car down for a proper repaint in Carmine Red. Hopefully it'll come out well.

I would have lent you my wire extraction tool. It makes pushing the connections out of the connector plug very easy and fast.
