I have not pulled this apart yet, so I don't know for sure what it looks like. I am wondering if someone has been there. My car is a 77, but I suspect this part goes on several years of 911's.
There is a foam gasket that fits on the fuel filler pipe where it goes through the fender into the trunk. When you install it, would it go on the trunk side or the fender side? I haven't quite figured out how it fits in there.

The gasket should be split around its outer radius, and the split goes partly in the trunk, partly inside the inner fender.
So I think the answer to your question is 'both'. ![]() Mike

Thanks Mike, I was hoping someone who had done it would chime it. How big a PITA is it to put that sucker in there? I figure its about a 1 hour job that will take me all day.

I was reassembling the car from scratch, so it was especially easy. But it shouldn't be too hard in any case. If you disconnect the filler tube from the tank (loosen the clamps and slide the coupler down) you should be able to pull off and replace the foam thing pretty easily. There's a bit of play in the filler pipe that helps.

I just put one of these on and also replaced the rubber filler tube boot that goes in the fender area. With the tube out, it is really easy to replace. I just had to use a little bit of lubrication on the filler tube when I put it back in and it went right in once I got past my vent tube. I have an 82 911sc. Pelican sells them along with the rubber boots.

Thanks guys. I have to replace the rubber filler tube boot too as the car does not have one. I got the parts from Pelican, I just didn't want to start the project and encounter some kind of problem that left the car down for a week or more due to lack of parts or skill. The last bit that is giving me pause, is the rubber hose that connects the filler pipe to the gas tank. If its been unmolested since 1977 it might be an interesting challenge to disconnect it.
I can't imagine why some PO took out the rubber boot, but it is what it is.

Just did this job after witnessing a fuel fill-up leak get worse and worse over a couple of months.
Thought you all would get a laugh when you see the condition of the filler tube......Looks like a whole tube of JB Weld..... ![]() |
