Show me your front mounted oil coolers!
HI all,
I have a modified RX-7 oil cooler that I'd like to mount in the front...it's one that a few Pelicanites recommended, and a local Porsche shop fabricates. My problem is, I don't seem to have enough room in my RSR (or previous RS) oil cooler to mount it. There's simply not enough room up there. Can anyone post some pics of how they've mounted theirs, and what cooler they used? Thanks! mike

Reese, is that a full size RSR bumper going on there? The late model one? I think I am looking for more of an early fitment. It looks like you had to cut into the sheet metal too, no?>

My cooler barely fits in my bumper (early RSR).

*note, this cooler is the 72 row Setrab version. It is their largest cooler and available from Elephant Racing, Mocal, etc, etc.

One more note, the setrab cooler's original mounting ears will not fit within the bumper. I cut them off and welded the L - brackets onto the cooler itself.

Doug, it looks like your nose has been modified to fit too. Is it even possible to keep it stock and put a cooler up front? (Nice work, by the way. But then, I love your car already. I took pics of it last oct in SD when I was there for the Steelers game.

I can show you the ducting and the cooler, however none of it is in the car yet!
![]() The problem with not ducting the front (modify the tub) is there is very little room to mount the cooler and still have airflow through it. I believe the Mazda cooler may be thicker than our setrabs as well which makes the problem even worse. Cheers

It's not possible to fit an RX7 oil cooler within the space provided by an RS front bumper unless you modify the front bulkhead like Doug did on his.
I use an Earls Temp-a-Cure cooler (no. 25012). It's a 50 row cooler, 15-5/16 x 7" wide with -12 AN male fittings and their steel mounting brackets. Due to the tight space behind an RS bumper, the cooler mounts almost flush with the bulkhead, yet the max. oil temperature I've ever seen in So Cal weather is 210ºF (2.7 RS-type engine). Both lines exit on the passenger side. The install includes about 4 1/2 feet of AN hose (stainless braided hose is optional), (3) straight and (1) 45º AN hose fittings, (2) AN-to-metric adapters to connect to the factory hard lines and assorted lock ties and Adel clamps to prevent the braided hose from rubbing against the chassis. Summit Racing is a good source for the AN stuff. Pegasus Racing and Elephant Racing are a couple of sources for the metric-to-AN adapters. I'd like to have Doug's oil cooling requirements (3.6). ![]() Hope this helps, Sherwood |

Emptyo-
Thanks for the kind words. I do forget that my bulkhead is for the short-hood. Someone way back when thought it would be cool to turn my long hood into a fake turbo. I use the TRE back date hood w/ the hood latch located for the later style hood. I guess that adds a lot of clearance. To add to Sherwood's comments, I also bought AN to 30mm unions from Patrick Motorsport. They were cheaper than any other vendor. It happened to be cheaper for me to buy the unions and the normal -16 fittings than to simply buy a special 30mm to -16 fitting (one part) from Mocal. ![]() Fernando has a nice oil cooler - setup. His pics were somehow deleted from my thread. I'll see if I can get him to post here.

Hi
this is how I mounted the oil cooler (72 row) on the old car. No mods to the chassis. It fit with an IROC front bumper ![]() |

This is behind a regular RS bumper:
![]() ![]() The Mazda coolers are thicker and that is going to cause issues.
